my undergrad used to give out copies of microsoft office to all students for free--any ideas if this is common practice for law schools? Im about to buy a laptop online and am wondering if I should throw the microsoft office bundle in there or not

I don't know about free, but most school sell it at a substantial discount. ND sells it for $50 (the full version), and my sister's school sells it for $15. Several of my friends have mentioned prices closer to what my sister got.

You should definitely contact your school's IT department or look on their website. Many schools have free or deeply discounted versions of Office, Windows, etc. Make sure you get a version of Office that includes OneNote, and also think about getting Windows 7 if you don't already have it.

I heart Windows 7

Office 2010 pro $60 for me.

for future reference: I found out from BLS that we get Microsoft Office for free upon request (incoming students only)--I'll double check on the version though.

Pitt provides free copies of Windows XP, Vista and 7 (ultimate in either 32 or 64 bit), Mac OS X, Office for both Mac and PC, Norton anti-virus software, and a host of other programs. It's pretty sweet, and a much better program than at my undergrad.
