Commuting and working out in the morning...breakfast?

Do any of you commute and workout early then read/study for a couple of hours before class? What do you eat before and after working out? Considering a 30-40 minute drive is it best to eat upon waking or 40 minutes later just before working out?

I'm interested in this too. I've been running in the mornings 3-4 times a week without eating anything, but I'd like to know whether everyone here just goes to the gym then drives back home to eat breakfast.

Right now I work out in the mornings before work. I usually eat half my breakfast, run, eat the other half, and then commute. On days I go to the gym, I eat half my breakfast, commute, work out, then eat the other half at work (my gym is right next to the office). I think it's good to give yourself some time to digest food before working out, especially before running or doing other cardio.

This is kind of what I was thinking. I will wake, commute, workout, then go directly to school. What do you eat heading out the door? I won't have time to make a proper breakfast but I'd still like something nutritious and appropriate befor a workout.

This is my routine: wake up at 6, drink whey protein shake w/ skim milk. Go to the gym and workout for 45 minutes. Go home, shower, eat breakfast (usually a bagel, cereal,or eggs) commute to work. It sucks getting up early, but its easier to do then, than after 8-12 hour day.

I get up, have a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee, wait a little while/commute, then workout. Post-workout, I usually have a banana and either a glass of soymilk or some yogurt (and maybe another cup of coffee!)

On work out days, three poached eggs on pieces of toast will get you through your workout, and you won't feel hungry during classes.

If no one mocks you mercilessly, there is no justice.

I regret to inform the world that there is no justice.

I think that I will work out right after classes, rather than in the morning. I would love to get in that fasted cardio, but its just too early. I'll have the same commute as you, but that seems like it will be too much. I think that a workout midday will help me to wake up for the ridiculous amount of studying to follow.

I trained for a half marathon a few years ago. I was still in undergrad, but I would work out before school at 5-6 am depending on the day. I would eat a south beach diet bar before I went and ran. It was small enough that it didn't affect running but enough that I would get hungry during a run. When I was finished working out I would drink a protein shake the best I have found is the Nitro core 24 chocolate. It actually tastes pretty good. Mix it with water and drink it on your way with a banana or some kind of fruit and your good to go. The protein is a slower acting protein so it will help you burn calories as it digests.

Really? We're going to do this? Seriously, do we have to turn to the internets for everything?

Thanks for most of the replies. I normally wake and immediately run/walk in the morning before returning to my house to eat so I was not sure of the best approach regarding the new commute. So a granola bar and banana or a couple of hard boiled eggs upon waking and a protein shake post workout seems to be acceptable?
Thanks for the feedback. I know very little about what is appropriate or proper (and why).
