Top Law Schools

So everyone says the E&Es are usually the best. Should I buy them now or wait until I see how my professors are? Most people on here say they use them regardless of the professor, I figured I could secure them now.

If I see one for a particularly low price (i.e. 5 bucks or so) I would pick it up. I got the Torts and Civ Pro E&E's through ebay since I saw some used copies being sold for just a few bucks. I'm not planning on reading them in advance or anything, since everyone seems to think that is not a good idea, but I figured it can't hurt to at least get my hands on them early without dropping any real money for them.

I picked up Torts and Contracts and half price books just to get familiar with the subject material.

You will very likely end up using Glannon for Torts and Civ Pro regardless of your prof. I would hold off on the others, however.

I picked up E&E's for my first semester classes on Amazon, mainly because they were just so cheap at the time ($5-7). I know professors will sometimes have a supplement they prefer (in which case you should absolutely get that supplement), I don't think it can hurt to just have the E&E's around, especially since they are so highly recommended.

If you find a good price, I say go ahead and buy them. Now is probably when the used copies will be the cheapest.

E&Es are usually written quite poorly, and tend to only work with bland profs who choose not to push their own agendas. Wait until law school to profile your prof before sinking money into a supplement.

The consensus seems to push on not getting E&Es till after starting Law School. I thought I had read in various respected guides to succeeding in Law School on TLS that it's useful reading through an E&E prior to taking a class to get a good general overview of the material, making it far easier to pick up on the specifics?

You can teach yourself entire areas of law using the e&e. So, i guess if you wanted to gun it up and learn an area before you get to school, sure, you could at least pick up the basics before going to class. I know people who have easily passed classes without reading any cases or going to many classes simply by using an e&e and a few other supplements.

You may as well buy them now, because you're going to want them next year.

Which part? The fact that he thought, the fact that he read it on a TLS guide, the idea that reading the E&E would give the OP a general overview of the course, or the idea that this would make it easier to pick up on specifics? Either way, I think your answer is incorrect.

I found E&Es to be highly overrated and used them scarcely at most. The most useful thing I ever saw in one was the exam advice located in the back of the torts E&E although the advice isn't much different from anything you'd learn from reading GTM.

I have a one hour or mroe train ride to work so I bought Dresslers understanding criminal law. It's well written and fairly interesting. I've decided to pass on 0L prep except for when I'm on the train.

Dressler's criminal law is hell of a book, 0L here almost half way through it.

It really depends on the person in my view. I dont know if you guys read Arrow's experience but reading E&E's worked very well for him and he anecdotally thinks majority of top 10% of the class have read E&E's during the summer.

In the end law school exams will test your knowledge and ability to apply the black letter of the law. Having to review the black letter during the semester instead of seeing it for the first time will greatly reinforce your knowledge and will give you a leg up on writing the exam quickly.

Certainly, in order to do well you must also be able to analyze situations and write the exams well. But going over material twice is in my opinion a lot better than going over it just once.

But then again I have the memory of a fish. If your memory is not that good reading material 4 months in advance might be useless.

Aren't the Chemerinsky books E&E? I haven't picked them up yet, but I plan to this summer. I'm not so much looking to prep prior to law school, but am thinking I would like to spread the cost around.

Nobody says the E&Es are usually the best. You should not buy them now until you know how your professors are. Most people do not say they use them regardless of the professor.

In my experience: the majority of the class probably did at least look at E&E's, but it was mostly because no one wants to overlook anything. I really don't think they are necessary. If you want to use them, have fun. But you don't need to read everything out there to be successful. Too many people overthink first year.
