It sounds like getting a legal job is becoming more like getting a normal job now. Pedigree and grades definitely matter, but things like resume, interview skills, demonstrated interest, and connections to the area play just as much of a deciding role. Before it seems like it was almost the same as the admissions game---get a certain GPA and get it from a certain school and then get into certain firms based 99 percent on this. Nonetheless, if someone with a 3.55 GPA from MVP doesn't get a job in this or any other economy I doubt it was because of their grades or the school.thesealocust wrote:Nobody at MVP is big law secure. The top 5% have MUCH better odds than the bottom 5%, but a lot has to do with intelligent bidding, personality, fit, experience, etc.Doritos wrote:You really think top 25% at MVP isn't biglaw secure? It's not like I disagree or anything but I thought top 1/4 would get some biglaw offers.
I know a handful of 3.5+ at UVA who did not secure big firm 2L summer employment. I know a number of people with grades closer to median that did. Grades matter a lot, more than anything else (unfortunately) - but sometimes it just doesn't work out. Lots of variables.
Edit to add: You probably misinterpreted me when I said "Those grades are good enough that a firm with a huge summer class in NYC might bite." To be more precise, I meant a V10 type firm with a mega-double-stuffed size summer class might bite. I really don't know what I'm talking about, but I get the impression that people in that grade range often had better luck at the biggest firms, since they hired more total attorneys + had people running scared out of a fear they'd be overly selective. I wasn't trying to imply that those grades made big law a remote possibility or anything.
