I know that there are a ton of these if you search it. But, actually, there isn't anyone for current 1L's (congrats everyone BTW for being done with your 1L year).
I'm a 0L and want to learn from all your advice/experiences!

Yes. 1L grades are by far the most important in law school. What kind of person would I be if I didn't kick my feet up a little bit now that they're done?

Do you want to know what 1Ls are going to do differently as 2Ls, or are you asking what 1Ls would do differently if they had 1L to do over again?

Yeah, it would make a lot more sense to ask the latter. After 1L year law students seem to do things rather differently (in the sense that they slack more on classes and spend time on other things).

Study less is a good answer for either question. People (myself included, at least for a while) got waaay too worked up about studying and seeing who could spend the most time in the library, especially 1st semester. That doesn't mean go out 5 nights a week, but working normal 9-5, 9-6pm days is plenty until a month or so before finals.

I raised my efficiency from first to second semester by about 40% and used some of that surplus time to relax, watch hulu, and sleep more. Went from 3.7 (top 7%) to 4.0 (top 1% cumulative gpa). Study smart not long. Law school is one big lesson in time management and consistency in habit. So to answer your question, I will continue to widdle away at deadweight time in 2 and 3L so that I can transfer these skills to cranking out billable hours once law school is over.
Edited to reflect current class rank

Study less. And not "more efficiently." Just less.

people who over-work were probably under-loved as children, so sad

I think first semester grades are even more important. Before second semester grades were posted, I already landed a job for the summer. Go crazy with studying your first semester.

seriously. A lot of classes for 2Ls and 3Ls aren't even curved.

Studying is key and I agree with most of my 1L (now 2L) peers on what's been said so far. The key is to learn how to study efficiently. During my second semester, I didn't study quite as hard as the first semester and still finished with a higher GPA for the second semester.
Grades are the key in your first semester. Study, again, is key but the difference in performance will be the result of preparation for final exams. I would try and get as many practice exams as possible from your professors and develop your stamina and accuracy. This is the one thing that's going to help you stand out because a lot of students don't take the time to review practice exams before the final. Practice exams will help you to develop your issue spotting abilities and enhance your ability to write under pressure.

Yup. Duke probably wont tell us ours until the end of the month at the earliest. I know they are all graded by our professors and not TAs, but still. I think they let the professors have a
little too much time.

In a rational world everyone would take it easy. The game is already over, unless you're gunning for clerkships/academia (ugh).
ITE, though, it seems that hope springs eternal, or something.
