The "super helpful little things" thread got me thinking...

Threads like this amuse me. The way you make notes and highlight is a personal decision. We can't tell you how to do it best.

Better question: how many of you used highlighting/underlining considerably during your studies, and did it help you?

No one highlighted anything. If we had highligted, it wouldn't have helped.

I highlighted like crazy using 5 different colors and made notes in the margins. Worked well for me.

Time line of highlighting methodology:

June 2009-August 2009: technicolor highlighting.
August 2009-December 2009: single color highlighting.
October 2009-January 2010: single color highlighting only where necessary.
January 2010 through present: drawing an arrow from a keyword in a sentence to a note/thoughts/ideas written in the margin.

EDIT: The above time line seems to correlate directly to increasing levels of apathy and/or laziness and/or general feelings of helplessness.

On my visit to WUSTL, I saw some dude in the library wearing a pink button down with four different books open and six different colored highlighters scattered on the table...it was 70 degrees and sunny outside. Made me for a number of reasons.

I underlined all the way through the year in black pen. It was useful not in the sense that when I went back to the case or got called on i knew where to look, but just because I seem to absorb important points better when I physically acknowledge them while reading. I think whether or not it will be helpful really depends on your learning style. If you are a kinetic learner, it'll probably help.

Rereading an important sentence while slamming my fist on the table quickly or waving my arms above my head probably would have had the same effect.
