I'll be beginning law office study in California

Hi!

I'll be beginning the California State Bar Law Office Study Program, under my family friend, who has the distinction of assisting in the defense of Phillip Morris. We're still discussing the exact specifics of our study program, but she nevertheless believes I'm quite capable of succeeding at this difficult course of study.

Funny, the First Year Law Students Exam should be required for ALL law students in California, as it will certainly weed out the non-committed and unprepared from wasting theirs and the law school's money.

Anyway, I'd like some general advice on beginning law studies. If I succeed, I'll be an attorney by the time I'm 22-23 years old. I hope to set up my own solo practice, and focus in admiralty law.

Thanks,
Doug

Out of curiosity, does anyone ever do this is in California? Are there any numbers on how many active members of the CA bar "read law?"

That's why it's called the Flame Nebula. :-) Clever, clever, Kohinoor. Love it.

Around 80 per year. Most don't do it because they believe in the ABA's statement that reading the law does not substitute for law school, or is not a good way of legal education. This is legal education, not medical education. Medical education is important and error-prone enough to be required to be taught in a classroom setting.

Legal education, as proved over centuries, simply involves reading and understanding concepts and being able to effectively persuade people based on those concepts. I don't see how a classroom with a professor (who probably hasn't practiced in years) is going to teach you any better than having motivation and being supervised by a practicing attorney.

I am also not paying $100,000 for this service. I don't want to begin my professional career with a mountain load of debt.

There's a UCLA law professor, Gary Blasi, who read law, Michael Ehline read law, and one of my proposed supervisor's colleagues at the firm read law.

What is a brown turtlehead? Is it related to LSAT stimuli?

It wasn't so much you as UWO-BADGPA and Kohinoor. Best of luck.

Oh! Well, okay.

After passing the bar, how difficult is it to set up a solo private legal practice? And how much can an attorney with <1 year of experience charge in an urban area, $100-$200/hour in tenth of an hour increments?

I want to do commercial and insurance law. My Dad is a marine insurance surveyor, and deals with the legal aspects of his work all the time, and I've gotten very interested in that field.

Lulz. The funny thing is that op (though likely fake) could potentially have the last laugh here, haha.

no one's gonna take you seriously if you don't actually go to law school
