Preferably: Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler, 43 hours of work for 200,000 in compensation. The associates working 43 hours probably arent the ones getting 200,000 but still, I'm sure they do quite well

huh? The lowest hours worked on the list is in the 50 neighborhood.

Idk, but this is going to be my super secret motivation that I just posted on the internet. I hope no one else has heard of this "biglaw" . Let's keep the secret of these high salaries between us.

All joking aside, I don't think most people are motivated to get good grades so they will work fewer hours. I hear people on this website hoping to work at firms like Watchell and Sullivan and Cromwell not Patterson even though Watchell and Sullivan have among the highest hours worked for associates.

I've got no problem with going to school for three years, spending thousands of duckets, and working 60 hours per week because you love it. Everyone should be so lucky as to find a professional passion. But if you don't like it... I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I've got no problem with going to school for three years, spending thousands of duckets, and working 60 hours per week because you love it. Everyone should be so lucky as to find a professional passion. But if you don't like it... I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

1) Market rate is basically 80/hour billed (2k billables). Obviously it goes down as you work more hours than you bill and bill more than 2K hours.

2) Many gigs that pay an hourly rate near a starting firm job don't give you the opportunity (requirement) to work that number of hours day in and day out.

3) You get more each year, and bonuses add a good amount when the economy isn't cratered.

+1. currently at one of these jobs. the boss above my boss who has been with the company 15 years makes 34000/year. she easily works 50 hours/week 50 weeks a year. $13.6/hour. Ill take biglaw.

I can't believe the whining I sometimes here about big or even midlaw. It's dangerous to go to law school without exposure to other jobs. PSA: most non-biglaw jobs are full of suck and don't pay nearly as well.

FULL of suck. BRIMMING with suck. I havent used my brain at work in months - and when I do I am usually performing some other duty that I shouldn't be.

These jobs also almost NEVER pay 26 year olds $100k/year either.

It is such a funny moment when people realize this. You may make a pile of money in biglaw, and it may be a nice gig, but by the hour it may be no better than being an LSAT instructor, or doing graphic design or some shit.

These are 2005 figures, btw, when the "market" rate was still 125k. But then again, they only surveyed 3-5th years. So this is probably not too far from the truth for the 1st years of today.

Agree with the sentiment, but if you have any Wachtell aspirations, misspelling their name is not going to help.

I'm just saying that your motivation to get good grades is ineffective. Even if you go into law school picturing the brass ring every time you open a book, it's not going to help you get good grades in law school. You have to find an advantage. The only motivation to do well in law school is the payoff at the end, be it biglaw or prestigious PI work. No one goes to law school for its own sake.
