Top Law Schools

I have a number of awesome teachers, and I would love to do research assistant jobs for them to get good recommendations when I graduate...

But the problem is my parents make a ton of money and so I don't have any loans or anything. This in turn disqualifies me for work-study certification. Is there a way I could still get a job like this if I ask not to get paid? Or am I totally screwed just because my parents are rich?

If so, that is pretty messed up. It's not like I can control how much my parents make.

Are you complaining that your parents are rich? If so, take two steps back, and stop being ridiculous.

Most law schools that I know of don't hand out work study for law school... they assume you'd rather have the loans. But you filled out the FAFSA as an independent student, I hope, so I'm sure you'll qualify for something... just go talk to your financial aid office.

You are wasting your time. This is her TLS Box: I'm the smartest person to ever exist ever. I applied to Harvard and Yale Law School as safeties. When I told them no after being accepting into the Super Secret Elite Law School... (So secret, I'm not legally allowed to disclose where it is. You can only get in by invite.) the deans of the "respective" schools tried offering me whatever I wanted but I stood strong and told them to bite me.

I know I'm lucky for not being in any debt, and I honestly don't have any loans out. I've also never filled out a FAFSA form before because I just don't qualify for it.

It's pretty unfair that I'm getting screwed out of opportunities to improve my resume, just because my parents make a lot more money than others. It's like I'm being penalized for my parents' hard work.

You're underestimating yourself. Just get get one of your parent's credit cards, crash their cars and force them to buy new ones, and otherwise systematically destroy their accumulated wealth. Keep this up long enough and eventually they'll become poor or else disown you. Either way, you'll soon qualify for that awesome Work Study program you've always wanted. I believe you will find yourself in a much more advantageous financial situation this way.

Its not just paying tuition. What about when mom and pop stop by and drop off the bounty from Costco or foot the bill for moving costs...

Your professors are not allowed to take you on as a research assistant unless you qualify for work study? Since when? If they tell you they can't, maybe it has nothing to do with your parent's income, but more that the professors just aren't that fond of you.

I'm being discriminated against because my letters of recommendation will not be as great as those who actually worked intimately with the professors. And yes, my parents foot the bill for a lot that I do, but after I graduate I'm essentially getting cut off. I'll then be in a worse position in the long-run because I'll be working in a less prestigious firm making less money.

And filling out FAFSA won't help me because my parents make almost $500,000 a year. I know most of you here are thinking "poor rich kid", but honestly this really really sucks.

And the purpose of the work-studies really are just resume builders. I've talked to others at my school who have done them, and they say the pay they receive works against their loans. Pretty messed up.

I didn't even check the work study box on my FAFSA because I didn't know it was even an option in law school. Am I going to need to go back and change that if I want to be an RA or anything like that?

Its pretty messed up that you are delusional enought to talk like this. Dont take paying work studies from people who NEED them. Like not to build a resume but to pay rent. You are the reason I am afraid to go to law school and make friends. Do an unpaid intership dude.

I understand that while the OP may be shut out of work study opportunities because they are designed as a form of financial aid, what is to stop the OP from acquiring non-paid research positions with professors if that is what the OP is looking for in the first place?
