Okay... driving to Austin tom. All day drive! Anyone got excellent advice on great places to go? Even if it some country bar...

Are you talking about bars in town, or on the way?

Just walk around 6th Street. It's the "thing" to "do" in Austin. Tons of bars.

If you're younger (21-25) or want to booze on the cheap, go to East 6th (East end, NOT EAST of I35). Molly Mae's is a decent scene with $1.50 Lone Star beers- the National Beer of Texas.

If you're a bit more sophisticated, head to West 6th and 4th street. Union Park and Six (Lance Armstrong's bar) are a lot of fun, but can be a bit pricey.

If you're drunk, make sure to seek out a Best Wurst stand.

I hope you're staying in town a while. The bars aren't as lively midweek as they are on weekends. Aside from NOLA, Austin has the best bar scene in the country.

Thanks, it's been a while

Much depends on what you are looking for. Music may be a little quiet this weekend as everyone gears up for South by So What, err South by Southwest going on next week.

There are a number of options on 4th and 6th...just be sure to watch out if driving home afterwards...remember that Austin has been jumping on the no-refusal bandwagon and getting warrants for a blood draw.

One disappointment is that the damned yuppies buying condos downtown are doing everything that they can to kill Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World. Many clubs are hit by stupid ordinances related to sound levels after something like 10PM.

And...gratuitous plug for a west 6th establishment...Third Base. The downtown location was the original of the three that Stix, Bill and a host of others have opened. 40+ flat screens around the place, good food and good staff. I used to stop there for dinner quite frequently as I headed home from the office.

Oh, and as a reminder for those who have not been in a while...the City of Austin is smoke free. Some bars will have patios where you can smoke, but don't try to light up inside the bar.

If you're not a hipster, you probably won't have a good time in austin.

Aside from the bars, there are a lot of things to do. I enjoy kayaking on town lake, jogging around town lake, or hiking in the greenbelt. Only a wet blanket couldn't find anything fun to do here.

Thanks guys for the posts. I checked out E-6th and enjoyed some of the bars there. Forgot the names of them however lol. I also saw Cross Canadian Ragweed! That was a fun concert. Saw the Alamo and had some uhmazing steak! All in all, TX is sweetttt.
