Garner has 2 good books on this topic:

The Winning Brief (100 tips for writing a good brief)

Persuading Judges, by Justice Scalia & Garner.

In general you do not need persuasive writing abilities to do well on law school exams. Probably a 7th grade reading/writing ability would be sufficient to score top 10% at any school. For real world legal work, it seems very important.

You should also avoid substituting "U" for "You" (and other instances of txt speek). 8)

Keep in mind that what counts as persuasive writing in the editorial sense is different from the legal sense. Empty rhetoric doesn't play nearly as well with judges as it does for the general public.
