At the risk of taking this thread in yet another off-topic direction, a lot of you have been listing food/alcohol as necessities. How important does, say, a gym membership, treadmill, etc. become? Or are we all destined to need spanx to fit in our suits from 1L?

I was under the impression that enrolling in the law school gave you access to the university's gym in most cases.

To be fair, its not super expensive to join the gym at Penn, its cheaper than most of the other gyms (though I joined a different one for convenience purposes).

Anyone else want to touch on the subject of backpacks/carrying bags? I plan to carry my laptop with me to every class and was thinking of just bringing it in a backpack. Any suggestions?

Re: gym. At Berkeley, it is $10 per semester (and $10 for the summer if you are going to be in the bay area). $30 isn't bad, and the gym at Berkeley isn't as bad as people make it seem. Minimal, yet functional - I frequent the Berkeley gym.

Yeah, doesn't apply to women, and I call BS on the 'no black for business' rule for men, too. No black suits with white shirts and plain ties is a good rule, but I can make a black suit look plenty good and not at all like a tuxedo with the right shirt and tie.

No black for business IS a rule in legal or other conservative professions. DOesn't matter how well you can wear it.

Funny. I wore a black suit to every one of the my callbacks and I have a V20 SA gig and am not at a T14. So I call bullshit as well

I went to a speech for a famous Image Consultant and you do not want to wear black. Wearing black gives off a sense of power, and the interviewer should have that power not you. Navy Blue is recommended as a good choice for interviews. If I ever clean out my spare room and find my old padfolio I will post my notes here.

Just don't try to get through airport security with a laptop in a backpack. They'll make you check it... no kidding. Backpacks are no longer considered carryon material, at least in SFO/SJC/LAX.

Really?? Wow. How is a backpack more unsafe than a normal bag?

If you carry on your backpack with a laptop in it, the laptop has to have it's own separate section, and there can be nothing in there with it (including cords, fans, etc). I had my laptop sleeve in my backpack and took it out and they still made me take my laptop out because the cords were in with it.

not to open up a can of worms here, but don't get a black suit - if you have only 1 suit - make it charcoal or navy . . . if you have 2 suits, make it charcoal and navy . . . after you have a charcoal and a navy, you can branch out into other colors, but the standard business suit is either charcoal or navy

The black suit rule isn't something some picky asshole is making up or exaggerating. It's a pretty well-known men's style standard. Black is hyper-formal - funerals, black tie events, and that's about it.

Flip through GQ or Esquire some time. You will never, ever, ever see a black suit modeled in those magazines.

I know it might seem arbitrary, but it's nothing to really get pissed off or indignant about. Just how it is.

I noticed that too. I think there are several professors who already record their lectures and post them anyway. It would be nice if the mic were wireless so that you could have it there ... I wonder how rules are with assigned seats and requesting to sit in the front. I space out if I get too far back

You have to get permission to do it; many of them won't allow it. Either way, the question you have to ask yourself is whether you will have time to listen to the recording. I know of one person who does this, and frankly, I know I don't have the time to listen to a recording.

If you decide you want to do this, it can be cheaper. If you have a built in mic on your computer, just use the notebook function in Word. It allows you to record audio. The quality won't be great, so you'll need to sit near the front.
