Do any of you know when do they post these awards and what's the value of them? I checked the cali.org website but didn't find anything. Thanks!

I believe that they are awarded by your school, not Cali itself. So it depends on your school. My school doesn't give them at all. To the other question, its a nice little thing to put on your resume. I mean, an A (or A+) speaks for itself, but it certainly won't hurt. That being said, I don't think they'll help you that much.

I heard from someone at my school that they would be posted next week at cali.org but I did not see any of that on the website, so I have no idea.
Thanks for the reply, though

I found this

look for your school and see if they uploaded them. As for timing, I have no clue lol >_<

the person with the highest score in the class. The thing is that I am hoping I got it for Contracts, but we had a midterm and a final... so I dunno if they compute both and calculate the highest score from both or only by looking at the final. I know I messed up two issues in the final.... so unless the people in my class messed up more I don't think I have the highest score.

I'm not 100% sure they're a HUGE deal. I mean, an A+ is an A+ regardless of whether your school gives out Cali awards. And no employer is going to look at your transcript, see an A+ and be like "damn, no Cali... rejected." I think its more of a nice extra thing. Definitely won't hurt, will probably help, but I doubt it'd give you a job you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I feel like they have more importance at a school like mine which does not give out A+s.

That's what I was thinking. If say 5 or so people in a class gets A's the Cali award is a nice way to distinguish yourself.

Speaking of Cali - California has what, 20 law schools? That's a lot of law schools, that's a lot of law students, that's a lot of recipe for disaster when it comes to finding a job. Who has semi-credited thoughts on the California legal market in say, three years?

WTF?
CALI = Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction
Here it is shorthand for an award for a good grade.
I mean I'm all for off topic posting, but that's really left field.
All I read was CALI and I fired away with my California concern.

Sorry, I deserve a round of this:

Not entirely true. From what I hear of NU's curve, an A+ is given to somewhere between 15-23% of each class

Counterpoint: graded LRW.
Actually, there are some very salient characteristics of the NU curve.
1) Consistency across classes. Unlike schools that prescribe a mean or a median, NU has ranges for each grade, so you don't have some professors giving all grades near the median and others giving a wide spread of grades.
2) No set median, or set cut-offs. The only guide-posts employers get is the GPA at graduation cut-offs for summa/magna/cum laude. This way employers can't arbitrarily reject people on either side of a cut-off.
3) A large standard deviation. The median is around a B+, just like UVA and Duke, but because of the mandatory level of A/A+ grades, the top of the class is up near 4.0. This allows employers to more easily distinguish people at, say, the top 1/4 mark from people around median.

Wow, I had no idea you could access the names of students receiving awards. I was sure that I had figured out which students were filling the write-on slots on LR, but I guess I was wrong about a couple. One gal who always sounds completely lost in class when she asks questions booked 5 classes 1L.
Although I've earned mostly A's, I've never been the top grade, so I really never checked out the awards section of the CALI site before.
edit: just scrolling around randomly, clicking on schools where I know a few of the students, and found some dude at LSU that booked 8 classes in 2009. Damn. I don't even know what to think about that. I mean, it's one thing to knock it out of the park and get a 4.0, but this is a whole different animal. What an incredible transfer transcript!

Hi guys,
I work for CALI, so let me know if you have any questions.
A few things about the awards:
- Your school tells us who won the CALI Award for the highest grade(s) in a class. Usually the professor of that course picks the winner(s).
- As such, we post/print/return the awards as your school sends them to us (in other words, it's best to contact your school if you're wondering about the status of your awards).
- About half of our 200 member schools give CALI Awards.
- Some entire schools, and some individuals, request that we do not display their awards publicly on our website. We comply with those requests. So not every award ever given is listed on the site.

Got a 98 in one class. I asked the professor today, he said he doesn't award higher than a 98, but he said he might have given two of them this past semester (in the same class).
Anyone know what happens in a tie situation?
