Top Law Schools

Anyone else a lot less interested in the "law" then they thought they would be and not coming back next semester?

It actually happens to a lot of people. A buddy of mine left after 1L for the same reason.

Happened to a few guys I know. They had good grades but just didn't like the study of law.

Happened to a couple of GMU students I knew.

The real winners quit before last semester's finals.

I have 3 friends in my class of 250 that I know of who just decided that law school wasn't for them ... they left before finals though ... I still have to believe that had I been in their shoes, I would have at least submitted myself to final exams given the cost / opportunities already forgone ... I mean, worst case scenario, their cumulative GPA is a 2.67 and that, of course, assumes that they are in the bottom 6 in every class out of our 60 person sections.

The title of the thread is how I feel after having registered for my February LSAT re-take. But to keep with what seems to be the intention of the thread, I like to think good people can still make a decent living practicing law, albeit probably needing a touch of luck in this economy.

being a "good person" really doesn't matter ... all that matters in this economy is 1L grades!

So mainly you wanted help on the curve?

Also good to know that I'll have to try really hard to have my law GPA be lower than my undergrad GPA.

Absolutely ... with the curve in mind, after this semester, I'll be damn if I ever take another curved class again. My goal is to only enroll in uncurved classes (required that they be under 40 people) here on out ...

The disadvantage to having uncurved classes is that it makes it much more difficult to make up for a "bad" start to law school as everyone is so closely bunched together after than 1L year. In looking at a grade report from 2007 / 2008, I noticed that my school gave very few B's, let alone B-'s, in any uncurved class.

Most courses in my undergrad department curved really harshly (B- curve, though we had gen eds which allowed were uncurved, so average gpa was higher). It was brutal.

Electrical Engineering, and yes I did. The Liberal arts college was uncurved (except for Math, which of course I took a lot of) and had grade inflation so gen eds were GPA boosters. That plus those who dropped after a year or two of sucking up tons of C's, the median GPA ended up around 3.15.

I can relate ... I attended a large state school as well before attending graduate school and law school. Our economics dept was much the same way!

I went to Illinois, and I knew enough to stay away from econ courses. The professors there were tough as well.

I know of at least 4 1L's who have already dropped. And that was before finals.

I don't know how those at the bottom of the class continue. Bottom half would have me re-thinking my plan. Hell, not in the top third would make me think of dropping out.

I was the fourth drop from my section of 100 people at UF. And I turned the paper in on Nov. 19.

Attrition is going to be nasty this year with all the people who come straight from undergrad because they cannot find work. Or people whose parents convince them that it would be good for starting a business career

Why'd you drop out before grades came out? Hated law?

Fuck, i had liberal arts classes that were curved by the professor. Often at the start of the quarter he or she would say: "I only give out 3 As" Class size 20-25.

Because I had a 770 GMAT w/ four years of solid work experience in my pocket as of Nov. 18. It's pretty easy to have a f**k this attitude in that situation - didn't see the point of busting it for finals. Also, my scholarship wasn't dependent on finishing the semester.

The only drawback is that my friends here now hate me.
