Emory may rise again, but right now, its reputation is soiled. :(
Yes it is disheartening. I think the amount of trash Emory has taken about the rankings drop is a bit over the top. Emory is still recognized by the non-TLS world as a top 20-25 school (I mean my god it was 22 last year and 20 the year before, people are quite short-sighted). The career services may not be great (I really don't know, since I haven't attended yet), but if that is the case I imagine you can find the same at many schools. People should be worrying about how they can hustle to find jobs, not complaining about career services. I have no doubt in the next few years Emory's rank will climb, the school puts too much money and pride in its grad programs for it not to. /rant

Anyway, it does seem odd to me that there's so few people on here from Emory. UGA's thread is like 50 times longer, as are all of its peer schools. I wonder what gives.
Oh, they exist, they're just very underground.
I think it's kind of stupid to be embarrassed about going to Emory. Yeah they have taken a lot of shit the past few months, but in the grand scheme of things being embarrassed about a school ranked #30 (and generally regarded as top-25 or higher) when there are SO many worse schools just doesn't make sense to me.
Heh, I didn't mean that. The whole ranking shenanigans had nothing to do with it, they're just not outspoken people to begin with.

Ah ok, gotcha. I wasn't offended or anything, I just figure that with all the shit people have been saying that some incoming Emory students may not feel confident talking about where they are going. Seems so odd to me though that this group is so less outspoken than other schools, the difference in the amount of posts in this thread and other threads is enormous. Oh well, more TLS secrets for me when 1L starts

I wish the admin released all this information earlier though...I'd have loved to have had the Orientation schedule a week ago, and the sections even earlier.

I don't want to out myself. :P

Does it matter much? I don't often fancy meeting other TLSers IRL.

Hey class of 2014ers, seriously considering Emory for next year (though I have to get accepted and hopefully get a good scholarship first, lol). How are all of y'all liking it thus far?

I'm really loving it. The people are really chill, the faculty members are great and very accessible, and I love the campus and surrounding areas. Lots of social events (keg in the law school plaza every Thursday ftw), and the undergrad campus right across the street is really nice too. I have no regrets whatsoever about attending.

A keg will keep things chill for realz, lol. Do you have any idea what employment after graduation is like? The stats are usually about as useful as a magic 8 ball. Hear any gossip from the 3Ls?

How're the doughnuts? A good substitute for jobs?

http://abovethelaw.com/2010/07/emory-la ... -need-jobs

"In 2009, of the top 50 law schools, Emory was #26 on the NLJ list of law schools with the highest percentage of graduates hired by top firms, for placing 23.5% of its grads in NLJ 250 firm jobs. That’s less than 1 in 4 people. Those set on Biglaw might have been better off going to school in New York or Chicago."

As long as this is still a place for people to learn about law schools before committing to them, take no offense. I wish everyone at Emory the best in their job search, but I am interested to hear this story corroborated (or disproved).

This is so new and original. This article has NEVER been posted ANYWHERE on this site!!

I'm not interested in the article itself but in whether it bears any resemblance to reality. Read my post.

Perhaps you could have been a bit more diplomatic and little less flippant in the question. The fact that jobs are not plentiful in this economy is not news, and neither is the fact that most career services offices are not doing a stellar job because of this.

If you are asking someone for their thoughts on the situation, it helps to be nicer, regardless of what your personal views are. People skills will get you far in life.

People skills have no correlation to internet posts. Nondescript text cannot communicate accurately a tone. Now, if you'll stop focusing so much on the trappings of my post and instead the content, I'll ask some more pointed questions. Do you interact much with career services? Do they have any intention of adopting the Duke/SMU system of "paying" law firms to accept grads? Is there a radio silence from the dean and his cohorts, or is Emory acknowledging their problem and working to fix it? As someone from the Southeast, I'm still considering an application to Emory.

I don't know what else a person can do but put a disclaimer absolving himself of offensive intent and asking to get legitimate answers. Touchy TLSers. I could always not post quotes or statistics. Would that make you feel better? It's not like my concerns weren't on topic or relevant, especially as you'll notice the poster directly above me--YOU--was asking about employment. Or are you really griping about the donuts quip? To me, it evinces a legitimate problem the school has, just like many law schools outside the T14 are having right now. Sorry if it happens to be the school you chose, but I'm never going to stop interrogating institutional authority, even if my only real means of doing so are 1Ls and 0Ls affiliated with the school.

You're kidding right? Also, 0Ls and 1Ls have no institutional authority, so your efforts are pointless. I am not saying your questions are irrelevant; I'm merely stating that your method is ineffective. I do not take personal offense because our goals are fairly similar. However, your methods are counterproductive and you should probably realize that before you enter into a profession that could potentially mean a lot of interaction with other people. I realize you may reserve this part of your personality for the anonymity of cyberspace, but it is really hard to stop that from bleeding out into other situations.

Um...do you understand subtlety? They are the only means I have to interrogating the institutional authority that law schools wield, an authority that seems all the more suspect given the data reporting scandals under discussion. Jesus, I suppose I could spam the adcoms and administration of Emory, but that's not going to help me if I end up applying. The social contract you enter into on TLS is one of information exchange, and since there is anonymity, what's the use in starting shit? You still have provided 0 helpful information, opting instead to make me backtrack and re-explain my words for the 3rd time.

You need to look up the definition of the word subtle. Also, how could I provide information I myself am asking for?

1/4 isn't that bad. lots of people at Emory are PI interested and then there's a few % that Clerk. A lot of even the T14-20 don't have more than 35% biglaw placement.

sdwhodat, out of curiosity, why are you seriously considering Emory? Your stats would place you in other schools much better (Emory is great, don't get me wrong, but there are better schools out there). Still, I guess Emory is a very chill law school. Competition isn't cutthroat here, which is awesome.

Truthfully? Free room and board from my sister, lol. That and it's the market I'd like to end up in.

Those are good reasons! And if they let you in, they'll probably give you a full scholarship. Have you looked into becoming a Woodruff Scholar?
