Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2014
Congrats to all the people getting off the waitlist. And for those of you looking for housing I'd like to give a little plug to the place my wife and I are renting: 1700 Midtown. http://www.liveat1700midtown.com/
Judging by Google maps it looks to be about 20 mins walking from the law school and the rent is a bit cheaper than some of the other places listed in the Obiter Dictum. The building manager, Anne, is prompt and friendly in responding to emails. Here is her email address if you would like to make inquires: akovacs@arlingtonproperties.net
I live abroad and haven't actually been to the place, but I know the building is very new (Google Street View actually shows it in various stages of construction). Also, if you do end up renting there, then let Anne know that I referred you. Apparently there is a 300 dollar referral bonus for tenants, which I would be more than happy to split.

How is everyone planning to make the move?
PODS? Relo-Cube? UHaul/Budget truck?
I just realized that I have absolutely no clue where I would shop for cheap, but decent furniture if I was to leave everything behind. Any ideas?
I heard there are some Nashville companies that literally go to the IKEA in Atlanta (I think it's the nearest one) and bring your orders back for you. It's crazy, and probably not worth it, but was interesting to see that sort of demand.

I've been thinking the same thing. When I realized that the nearest IKEA was in Atlanta, that made me nervous for selling all of my furniture in CA. However, I hope to find stuff on Craigslist for cheaper than lugging furniture from California to Nashville...fingersxd wrote:How is everyone planning to make the move?

Haha yup! I'm pretty nervous and it's a bit more than I wanted to spend but I love being able to walk to class and it seems great. My landlord is maybe a tad sketchy though so that will be interesting.SilverE2 wrote:Nice! Our move in date is the 24th. Did you rent it sight unseen?akili wrote:SUP! Yeah, it's pricey, but to be honest I just spent 5 days in Nashville and there's just not much choice around the school that's A. Not expensive and B. Safe. For myself I figured I'd pay the premium and live at The Bristol the first year, and then when I get more familiar with Nashville, traffic, etc, I can save some money and move farther away. If it's any consolation to you, I was pretty exhaustive in my apartment choice and I went with the Bristol.akili wrote:Haha yup! The Bristol is pretty nice, there's no pool (:(), but the gym is nicer than the average apartment gym, the people I met living there seemed nice, the building seems quiet. My apartment (there are probably bigger floor plans) is pretty nice, but small, it's a 1 bed 1 bath maybe 680 sq. ft. or so. Overall I think you'll be happy with your choice, the walk to school can't be beat, it's like 8 minutes at a leisurely pace and I'm sure you could do it in 4 - 5 if you walked fast, and there are some bars and stuff right down the street that are safe to walk to.

Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2014
This is actually super relieving for me to hear (read?)! I'm pretty much planning on doing the same thing for next year. I just didn't want to take any chances with 1L year and roommates and stuff (there was a lot of drama in my house in college and it was really distracting/frustrating). I also have a dog and I liked that I could walk home to check on him during the day if I wanted. That's great about the gym too! Thanks so much for the info!!SilverE2 wrote:

What's the earliest we will know what books we need? I'd like to start ordering mine (preferably online), and don't want to wait until orientation.

I have a feeling we won't know until orientation. I want to order my books online too.

You don't know until orientation and they don't give you financial aid checks until a week into it. It's really shitty.
Also, does anyone have a PDF of the recent obiter dictum? I'm having trouble finding a place from NYC and think it would help

That sucks. I can live w/out the check, but it's going to be apain to rush along with every other 0L to try to order our books at the same friggin' time (and then throw some more $ out the window for expedited shipping).BunkMoreland wrote:You don't know until orientation and they don't give you financial aid checks until a week into it. I'd call Admissions; they might be able to PDF you the pages from the housing section.

I am someone that rarely bought books in college and when I did I'd buy old editions. Maybe other students will chime in but I have found you will most likely not save significant money online. I looked extensively for my 1L books and was only able to find a real deal on one. The used books will also most likely be marked and highlighted. My advice is to just get them from the bookstore or new from an online seller (again, for ~the same price). Or try the Facebook group.
Also, I wouldn't worry about not having them for the very first day of class. If I recall correctly all of first, and most second-day reading was posted in some for or another on OAK.
