Needs to start somewhere! For those admitted to Iowa or considering, REPRESENT.
And if anyone considering coming to Iowa/accepted has any questions about the area, just let me know. Lived here since birth.

So, fellow UI College of Law '14 students, let's get acquainted :)

Congrats on getting accepted to Iowa. I'm 98.04% sure that Iowa's my choice too. As such, I'll probably be moving to Iowa City this fall without any real knowledge of the area. The impression I get is that living west of the river is generally quieter than living east of the river because of fewer undergrads. Does this gel with your experience of the place as a native?

Just got in yesterday and I'm still on the acceptance high. By far my number one choice and will be attending ASW in March.

Cold, at the moment. But I think on the whole Iowa City pleasantly surprises people. The university brings a lot of interesting things/people here. Throw in low cost of living, nice people and very low crime and I think you'll like being here.

More importantly, the people at the law school are very, very friendly. I have never once had a problem getting notes, supplements, etc. from anybody.

Good, but generic. Tons of bars downtown with a good range of people from undergrad, law, med, etc. The bars are pretty much always packed because there are so many undergrads, but if you're looking for something quieter there are more relaxed spots as well.

If you're not into drinking we get a decent amount of good music and also have a pretty cool theater downtown.

So, on the whole, not incredibly exciting as compared to bigger cities, but good for the size of Iowa City and enough to keep you entertained on the one or two nights a week that you'll actually be able to go out.

The university does bring in some pretty big names every once in awhile. I'm going to see the Roots in a couple of weeks. The big arena shows are typically in Cedar Rapids (20 minutes away) though.

Also, if you like to play in public I think there are a few venues that have open mics and will let you come in and rock the drums for a few minutes on some nights.

This is definitely true, though this isn't to say the East side is incredibly noisy. If you live right downtown, there may be some racket on weekends, but if you live even a mile away from downtown the noise probably won't be an issue.

If you're looking for a unique neighborhood hit up directly North of downtown. Beautiful and quiet.

I don't think your chances are bad. I get the impression that Iowa values GPA more heavily than LSAT, and with their numbers-plus policy, your good softs/LOR bode well :)

I posted something similar in the "discuss your law school" forum, but for anyone wondering what rent prices are like in Iowa City might find this helpful:

I just signed a lease on the West Side of town (about 3/4 mile from the law school) for a large two bedroom apartment (I want to use one of the bedrooms as a study/office) for $590 a month - everything included but electric, which apparently runs about $35 a month. Not too shabby for a huge place for one person.

Last year I lived in large two bedroom apartment in downtown Iowa City (Van Buren and Burlington - very close to everything). I shared that place with a roommate, and that cost us about $400 a month each, plus electric.

So yeah, thought I'd just share these prices for anyone who was wondering about the cost of rent in Iowa City. Hope it was helpful!
