Last year there wasn't a weekend, but a couple of short (a few hours, not a whole day) events for admitted students in April and May, including a mock lecture from Jerry Kang (generally considered one of the best professors at the school) and some great food and free booze. Worth going to one, not both. I don't remember for sure, but I think there was some information sent about a travel stipend that I didn't pay attention to because I'm local. E-mail Rob Schwartz - he's a great guy, and I'm sure he'll get back really quickly.

I just filled out a housing application. This should be fun.

Haven't committed to UCLA yet (still waiting to see what other acceptances I get, and to see the school itself at ASD), but we just submitted a housing application too (guy at the housing office said it was fine to do, and probably smart because the wait-list can be long).
Also, re: the school helping out with travel expenses to the ASD. Talked to Dean Schwartz the other day and they were willing to take care of my flight. Just had to ask and he got me in touch with the right people to talk to.

hi guys,
i'm not committed to UCLA, but have a question for those of you who got scholarships. My scholarship says a 2.5 min gpa requirement; is this standard? Also, do any of you know what a 2.5 would equate to class rank wise?

2.5 would be the bottom of the class. I would guess like bottom 5% or so maybe even lower. There's no official rank my best Estimates are 3.0 is about bottom 1/4 or so, 3.2 or maybe more like 3.3ish is median and 3.76 or so is top 10%.
Those are just my rough estimates from talking to other 2l's.

I'm posting this in a couple of UCLA related threads so apologies to anyone who reads this more than once.
Anybody have any thoughts on, or success with, scholarship negotiations (with UCLA specifically, or other schools in general)? Here's my situation:
UCLA offered me $75,000. Their most recent figures put total cost of attendance over three years (inc. COL) at approx $75,000/yr OOS, $65,000/yr in-state. Given the ease of establishing CA residency, that puts total COA over three years at $205,000 (one year at out-of-state, two years at in-state). Take out the $75,000 scholly and I'm at $130,000.
Texas offered me an In-state exemption + $9,5000/yr. Total value over three years is $76,500. For an in-state student their COA is 45,170/yr. Subtract the $9,500 and that's down to $35,670/yr. Over three years that comes to $107,010.
COA difference over three years then comes to $22,990.
UCLA and Texas are tied at 15th in the rankings. Though the total $$ value of their offers are only $1,500 apart, I'm wondering if UCLA might be willing to negotiate vis-a-vis the overall difference in COA?
Anybody have any thoughts on this or experience with the process (w/r/t UCLA specifically or just in general)? How to go about presenting it? etc. Any thoughts/advice/suggestions appreciated.
I prefer UCLA to Texas for a variety of reasons (though that is subject to change), but that approx. $23,000 difference over three years looks like a big number to me.
Thanks for any help/advice!

Just got accepted today with a call from the Dean. Question - did you all find out scholly info via email or snail mail? And did it come right away with the official acceptance?

when did you get in? if you didnt hear about merit aid upon acceptance, youll basically need to ask for it. and if u werent awarded any need based money, they dont tell u that, they just send you the "here's your loans plan for the next 3 years."
