Penn Law Class of 2014

Post by caneman13 » Sat Oct 16, 2010 5:24 pm

I know its early, but i'm bored and deferred from last cycle. For those that decide to attend Penn, feel free to post your thoughts on housing, visits, etc. I already rent an apartment in philly, but it would be nice to hear other's plans

I am so excited that someone made this group :)

I am also deferred from last cycle. Not sure when Penn Students typically start looking for apartments, but I went to undergrad in DE and Dec was when places for the next yr. started running out (esp. if you're more interested in renting a house than an apt). I'm gonna go check out places in mid-November. Penn's off-campus housing services page is great and contains a searchable database.

Also deferred from last cycle...seems like we've got a bit of a trend here. I've already started doing some preliminary looking into the apartment/housing situation and I'm weighing the pros and cons of reasonable rent versus location and aesthetics. Obviously hoping for the best of both worlds there.

Do you all intend on going to admitted students weekend in the spring?

If you aren't from PA start looking NOW. All of the good studios near campus get snapped up quick as fuck (found this out the hard way). Certainly get your lease signed by ASW.

I'd start looking for housing asap. I live in philly, so i just rented a place, but after looking around some of the good apartments, and talking to people, it seems that things fill up pretty quickly. The building I just got my place in is completely full now until May. So if you have the time, I would definitely start looking. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about housing around philly...i've pretty much looked everywhere the past 2 months.

Another deferral here... glad to see I am not the only one. I haven't been keeping up with tls since I started working, anyone know how OCI went?

Also deferred from last year. Excited that someone made this thread already!

And I'm already lightly looking for housing. Even last ASW, I went and toured some apt complexes in University City. I'll probably head out there in May or early June, per strict instructions from friends in the med school. So, we'll see what happens. I just want someplace close to the school that isn't ridiculously expensive like Domus or the Left Bank.

I was accepted ED today as well. What are your thoughts on living in the on-campus housing vs. off-campus?

Was accepted today via ED as well.

I noticed many people deferred from last year, and I was thinking of doing the same this year. How easy (or hard) was it to get a deferment, and what were your reasons?

Great to be posting here by the way!

Having attended Penn for undergrad and worked in Philly for a year and half now, I think I have a pretty fair assessment of the two. Pretty much the only benefits of living on-campus is being close to school and living nearby other students. In general, however, the quality of housing is very poor and it's almost not worth it. If you don't mind taking public transpo to class everyday, live in the city!! so worth it!

What about having to stay on campus until the wee hours of the morning? What's the trek home like then? That's the main thing I'm concerned about with living off-campus.

+1

My cousin goes to Penn UG, lives off-campus in University City, and has been mugged doing just that. The graduate housing is overpriced and shitty, but it does have the lure of convenience and safety. For the same price though, I could get a one-bedroom across the river at 2400 Chestnut or Park Towne Place, which are both supposed to be very nice. Decisions, decisions.

I've grown too used to Pittsburgh, where safe, convenient one-bedrooms under $800 abound...

They have door to door shuttle service after hours covering most of the UC to Rittenhouse. Free. Also if you are walking/biking you can ask one of the public safety to escort you. It isn't like 15 years go, a lot safer now.

ETA: grad housing is crap though. I hear enough of it. I live at home so not first hand knowledge.

r6 you're always so helpful with penn/philly Qs, thank you.

and as i'm a complete noob to philly, i want to make sure i have this right: downtown philly = city center, and that's the area east of Penn, between the two rivers? it's hard to tell exactly what area is considered downtown. and rittenhouse, i'm assuming, refers to the rittenhouse square area? and is that area considered to be downtown? aaah so many questions.

Haha, I live in State College currently...second safest town in the U.S...thus why I am concerned.

NP, I love Philly and Penn, glad to be a little useful lol

Between the two rivers you have front street (Penn's Landing) to 24-26th street. That's center city. From 30th street to 40th street is Penn. 40th - about 46-48 street is UC. North to Haverford Ave and south to Baltimore ave. That's the area Penn public safety and Penn Police patrol. You have a couple of other colleges within the same zone (Drexel is mixed in).

Rittenhouse Square is around 18-20 st. It is a little park you can see on the map. Upscale condos around there. To the south you can find reasonable apartments.
Further east to the east of broad street you can find more and cheaper apartments but you would need to take bus/subway. There are subway stops 2 blocks from the law school to the north, and a underground trolley stop right on the block of the law school/bookstore, that can take you into center city as well.
Most social activities (bar clubs) are either around Rittenhouse square, or olde city which is 2nd-4th street (where I work).

Grad student center run orientation programs right before school starts. I volunteered for it last year, it was pretty cool. We had a walking tour into the city and around campus. Make sure you sign up for one when time is close.

Let me know if you guys need any info, I will help answer to the best of my knowledge. I will gladly show everyone around at ASW too.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
