Top Law Schools

Hi,

I'm at a Tier 3 school with a full scholarship- made law review too.
The school places about 5-10% in big law.

I am top 1% (which historically should get me big law but one never knows). Assuming I get in to one of CCNP, is it worth it to transfer?

Also, in at GULC. Worth it to go there?

If your school places 5-10% into big law and big law is what you want, being top 1% sounds like you're in a pretty good position. Why would you want to incur the debt for the same outcome? Unless you come from or have a shit ton of money, adding well north of $100k in debt wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Don't transfer. Don't take on all that debt for a marginal bump. You've positioned yourself great for biglaw at your current school and with no debt

I think this might be helpful to you. In my opinion, you shouldn't transfer if all you want is biglaw.

Transfer if you can. No one really cares about law review when you are at a top 14.

Your pedigree will keep you from a lot of firms.

Debt sucks though and so does missing friends that you made your 1L year.

You would be a fool to transfer. Are you worried about prestige or about your financial situation? Borrowing 150k means that you will have to make like 250k to pay it back. And you do need to eat and have home in the meantime, so it will take you a good amount of time to repay that, even on biglaw salary. If having a better school on your resume is worth that headache to you, then transfer. If actually pocketing your biglaw salary and then going to an in-house job with a bunch of savings is more important to you, then stay.

What law firms does your school actually place into? Think critically about your question. You need to compare what you can reasonably expect from your school versus what a transfer at your target can get. I don't know that information, but I'm sure you can find out. Then make your own probably determination, see how much better of a position you'll be in, and then decide for yourself whether the risk and stress of it all is worth it, to you.

I think it depends on your goals. Do you want private sector or public sector? If public, I think its worth it to transfer to any of the T14 (maybe besides UT). If private, I don't think its worth it to transfer because of the increased loan payments. But to each their own.
