Letters of Rec

If Letters of Rec aren't required for a schools admissions process, is it detrimental to not send them (see NYU)? If one did sent LoRs from undergrad profs, would that also be frowned upon?
Only ask because it seems awkward at this point to email a prof and ask for a LoR when I can't meet in-person. Not sure if anyone has any advice regarding that either.

I actually used an undergrad prof for NYU, because I'd read the letter and knew it was really strong. I also used a law prof, though, and I emailed the request. I think some profs are okay with email. They may want to meet or talk on the phone about your desire to transfer (mine did) but email is probably okay if you're writing carefully (I.e., staying positive about your 1L school).

May I ask how you phrased the e-mail? Also how did you pick the prof?
