Transfer Decision: NYU v. GULC

So, I was admitted to GULC last month and have registered for classes, gotten my EIW interview list, completed the journal competition, and signed a lease with a friend of mine, but I was JUST admitted to NYU yesterday and now am faced with the predicament of whether or not to accept at NYU. Basically, my question is whether it'd be worth going to NYU under these circumstances, assuming I could not get out of the lease in DC. Is NYU really THAT better than GULC?

Thanks in advance y'all.

Really depends on a lot of factors. What are your career goals? Where do you want to practice? NYU will also likely end up being more expensive, even if you DO get out of your lease in DC, but that depends on how debt averse you are. Just a few factors to consider.

I noticed that the choosing law school forum has certain guidelines to address this concern, and I thought this forum may benefit from the same. In that vein, those seeking advise on transferring should provide:

-Your current law school (or as specific a range as possible) and the total debt at graduation if you were to stay (debt = cost of tuition + fees + books + cost of living (COL) + accumulated interest - scholarships - financing from sources other than loans.)
-The transfer schools you are considering and the total debt at each, at the time of graduation, if you were to transfer there.
-Where you're from and where you want to work, and other places where you have significant ties (if any).
-The type of job you are seeking directly following law school as well as your longer-term career goals.
-If you provided a range rather than your specific current law school, an assessment of how well your current school places graduates into your target market and your target jobs.
-Any other personal factors that may influence your decision (eg: being close to family, needing a market where your significant other can find a job, etc.)

I'm happy to take suggestions on other items to add to the list. As a former transfer, I'm also happy to give my two cents on transfer decisions, both in this thread and via PM.

If you got onto a journal as well, I think this tips in favor of GULC. I don't think you could write on for NYU anymore (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) and you seem to have set yourself up for some success at GULC. Not only is paying for breaking the lease gona hurt you, you'll also have to find everything (new apt in NYC, participate in their bidding, get courses). Too much pain to me, sounds like. But hey, you do you.

1) getting onto some random secondary journal should never, ever tip the balance for major life decisions, 2) it's really not hard to get biglaw at NYU and is not a sure thing at all at GTWN, so, assuming you will have a lot of debt, NYU would seem to be much safer (even though it will be a little more expensive), and 3) if you have a desire to be in DC long-term, GTWN might have an edge, but NYU would seem a better option if your long-term geographical ambitions were outside the district.

I'd rather stay at my 1L law school than transferring to GULC. I ended up transferring to NYU at about the same time two years ago.

The best choice is the just stay at your current school (if you have a scholarship). If you don't have a scholarship, NYU. I would not ever recommend transferring to GULC for any reason. Not worth it.

This. If you must incur more debt, then go to NYU. It's a substantially better law school. As for the lease, find a way to get out or to sublease it. That's not a reason to go to GULC over NYU. But at the same time, if you're likely to land biglaw at your current school and have a scholarship, then neither of these options is worth it.

I'd say go to NYU, but GULC does give out a very generous need-based grant if u qualify.

Lol. I declined a transfer to a comp school because I weighed the odds of landing biglaw from my current school against the added cost of a transfer. I stayed, landed several biglaw offers, and an art.3 clerkship. I think I have some insight to lend. As for GULC, my cousin transferred and struck out at their oci. He landed on his feet later on, so it was (probably?) worth it in the end. But had he gone to nyu, things would have been much easier for him and would have better justified the added 100+k debt.
