CCN transferring to H or S...a few questions

Please don't quote.

Anyone have any information available about the chances here? There aren't many CCN-->H/S transfers, so information about %ile and acceptance/rejection from any CCN or T-14 would help.

Do either of those schools give transfer students need-based aid?

Is it realistic to expect to make friends after transferring? Form relationships with professors?

I'm approximately top 10% of my class right now but expect to be at approximately top 20% or so after my next set of exams. Would that be too low for me to transfer? Iffy? Great?

There is a small chance that I will be able to stay at my school. If I ask professors for recommendations and then stay will those bridges be burned?

What is OCI like for transfers?

(I'm also thinking about Berkeley, but their website is a little more informative. I will be transferring for family reasons.)

Why do you need to transfer? You'll get limited aid and you can probably get close to whatever you want with those projected grades.

Edited my reply -- I'm transferring for family reasons. I would strongly prefer to stay at my current school and I am very happy about the opportunities here, both for employment and for clerkships. However, that's probably not going to be an option for various reasons.

Family reasons

Chooses two schools on opposite coasts

What family reasons are these? "Family said they won't pay tuition unless I graduate from Harvard of Stanford"

You have to transfer for family reasons but are open to a school in CA and one in MA? I'm also really confused by that.

I'd say do anything possible to stay at your current school.

Soo...it basically has nothing to do with family reasons?

If you actually need to transfer (maybe your SO is choosing between one of those two schools?), you're working with a small sample size. At Chicago, we had 1 every other year or so transfer. Both that I knew had decent (top 10-15%) grades, but YMMV.

I transferred from a CCN to a HYS. PM me for more info if you want. I suspect that you would have a better shot at H than at S, simply due to the massive number of transfers that H takes. Top 20% would be a little iffy for me to feel too good about my chances. Do you have softs like a PhD or anything?

Basic question: do softs matter for transfer? Do they have to be something like PHD/Rhode Scholar to mean anything?

I need to take custody of my little sister. She has some special needs. I have family in a few different places who have offered to help out, plus I need to live in a place with good public schools so she can get decent support. I'm lucky that Boston and the bay area might work for us. Y/CCN won't, I don't have family there and my family is not moving so I can finish law school...they have houses and kids of their own

Thanks for the info everyone.

I am trying to set up school/services here but I'm also trying to do 1L and it isn't looking like it's working out

I agree that it would be the best for me though

I believe it does. I know of a guy who was roughly top 30% at a CCN who transferred to Y based on research interests he had that made Y the obvious choice. There is no way top 30% would get in otherwise. I know several people in similar positions, in fact, and all had research interests that aligned with the school to which they transferred, though I don't think their grades alone would have been enough. I don't know how much other softs would matter. I suspect they wouldn't have that much of an impact.

Harvard definitely does need-based aid, if you're willing to give them both personal and parental (if you're 29 or less) financial info.

It's harder to make friends and form professor relationships, but definitely realistic if you make an effort. I really only have 1 good recommendation-level professor relationship after 2 semesters here, but I'm hoping to up that to 2-3+ by the time I graduate (based on courses I take and RA work I do).

No idea on the chances.

OCI for most (if not all) of this year's Harvard transfer class was very successful. I think it's tied to 1L credentials as much as anything, but if you're good enough to transfer, you're good enough to get a job.

Thank you, that is very helpful info, especially about need-based aid.

Oh, yeah, all of HYS give need-based aid to transfers. Harvard I believe only requires the standard FAFSA shit filled out, while YS require another weird form called Need Access. But it's pretty much the same thing, though it goes into a little more detail on your finances.

Well, this turned out to be a full-on douchebag remark, eh?

Turned out? lol

It was a douchebag remark in the first instance, but thanks for your concern
