I know the application is not due until summer, but when is the right time to start asking for recommendation letters? Is it too late if I ask after the spring grades are out? How important are the letters anyways?

Assuming it's not a total shit letter I doubt letters matter too much. I know some schools don't even ask for them. And post-spring-grades letters will most certainly be too late for some schools but won't make any difference for others. I advise you research the schools you want to apply to and figure out what timelines are required. If you have a professor who likes you and with whom you have a good relationship from your first semester I don't see why you'd wait to ask for their letter.

ask now and get it out of the way with. They will have tons of time to complete it and you'll have less things to do later for the application process
