Dropping out at the end of the first semester, can I retake LSAT and re-apply elsewhere?

So from what I understand from reading posts here, someone has to have at least a year of grades to transfer.
If my grades are not on track for the top 15% and I chose to withdraw after one semester, would I be able to retake the LSAT and apply as a new student elsewhere if my score was substantially improved? I go to a tier 2 school, and I understand that you need to transfer to really have a shot at big law from a school such as mine.
If not, if I took a 1-2 year gap to get a masters or for work, would that change the situation?
