Currently: TT 15-20% NYC school.
Target School: T 15-20 school
Their early OCI bidding process ended yesterday. They still have a fall OCI.
Should i still partcipate in my current school's early OCI?
What happens if I do get interviews from my current school, do i tell the interviwerers I am at T 15-20 now?

Try to get a discount on your current tuition and roll from there.

The consensus on this board seems to be that participating in your old school's OCI with the intention of transferring is unethical.

I've only seen it said that doing *both* OCIs is unethical.

OP implied that he also intends on participating in his new school's fall OCI.

Is this UT? The "early" OCI is the only real, main OCI, if I remember correctly.

Same if OP is talking about GW - only the first OCI in August is a 'real' one.

Its not UT, its UCLA actually.
Of course if a alumi comes to my current school's OCI I am not going to tell them I transferring.
Also if I do participate in UCLA's fall OCI, is that unethical?

Or can I transfer and mass email employers? I can mention in my cover letter that I got into UCLA after the bidding deadline.
Or can I do the above and do the OCI at my current school?

No. If you can participate in both, you are just being dumb not participating in both. participate in as many you are entitled.

Check that thread. It's pretty unanimous that missing EIW/early OCI is professional suicide if you want a Big Law job.

It's not fair that once you miss the boat on a 2l summer associate position you're basically fucked for big law, but it is pretty close to true. So, counter this unfairness by doing what you have to do to survive. Apply to whatever you want.

Thank you, I will do everything I can.
So I already submitted my bids for my current school. If i deposit at UCLA sometime this week or next, does that mean i have to withdraw from my current school or deposit doesn't mean officially withdraw. That is important because if i officially withdraw, i am pretty sure my current school is going to kick me off from OCI.
Also, should i still transfer to UCLA assuming that I did not have to withdraw from my current school and participated in OCI and hopefully landed some interviews?
Thank you guys.

You're in a difficult situation, in addition to the OCI mess, because your current Tier Two law school is in NYC & you want to transfer to & live in Southern California.
OP: Where do you want to live & work after law school ?

Not sure. My best guess is that if you want to work in NYC for 10 to 15 years after law school, then you should stay at your current NYC based school. Plus, it will be very difficult to leave NYC after 10 or 15 years to start over in LA.

Did you make law review at your current school ? If so, and if you have a scholarship, that's another reason to stay. Also, do everything you can to finish in the top 10% at your current law school if you plan on applying to West Coast firms from a NYC TT.

I want to work in NYC for 10 to 15 years then move back. I am from LA originally so moving back for 2 years of school won't be a big deal and i would be paying in-state tuition.
Back to my previous question, can I deposit at UCLA to keep my spot and not withdraw from my current school so i can participate in OCI?
Also, is it worth transferring if i do land a job through the OCI process at my current school, considering that UCLA is a nationally known school?

I am on 80% scholarship and I made journal at my school. I just want to know if a J.D from a nationally known school is going to help me down the road, assuming that i land a job through OCI at my current school. If I didn't land a job (knock on wood), then i would definitely transfer to UCLA and mass email from there.

I think that you should address that issue with your current school. Regarding whether to stay or leave if you get a job offer during your current school's OCI, I would stay. UCLA's name isn't that powerful in NYC & in 10 or 15 years your law school will be a minor factor when seeking a new position across the country.

With an 80% scholarship, law review & a top 15% to 20% ranking, staying is better especially since you want NYC employment. Years down the road, making
law review editor & getting published along with a top 10% final class rank should enhance your resume enough to compensate for the difference in law school prestige. For the most part, your law school remains important for about 5 years after law school; then what you did & how many clients you can attract are more important in the hiring process.

Added on to yours. I don't think anyone would tell a person not to participate in their OCI if they were still just hoping to transfer.
You should already be mass-mailing. You should also be bidding at your current school. If you get interviews at your current school and IF (notice that's a big if at this point in the summer) you get in to UCLA and decide to attend, you should contact the firms you got interviews with, advise them you're transferring, and ask if you could schedule something either during their interviews at UCLA or outside of campus interviews.

It's hard to pass up an opportunity to graduate from such a prestigious law school in your home region. If your job focus was solely on Southern California, then the move might make sense. As things are, you'll probably be a New Yorker for life. Make the most of your journal experience & try to graduate in the top 10%.
