Do schools ever ask applicants to interview? I take it thats a sign of likely to get in, right?

It might be a sign that the admissions committee is "on the fence" about whether or not to offer you admission. (I think that Cornell & Northwestern encourages or used to encourage interviews.)

What makes you think its on the fence as opposed to something more positive?

Because, if they were that sold on you, there would be no need to chat with you further. They would just review your app, give it the stamp of approval, and admit you. For schools that interview transfers on a discretionary basis, they very likely only interview them when they are on the fence, and want to learn more beyond the app itself.

I wouldn't try and construe it either way, whether negative or positive. Just take it as an opportunity to go in and seal the deal. They clearly have you in consideration, and getting to sit with them face to face is an excellent opportunity to show your enthusiasm, and really sell them.

The something more positive than "on the fence" is "you're admitted." If you're admitted, then why wouldn't they just admit you outright?

Anecdotally, I'm fairly certain that there wasn't a single UChi ED admit who wasn't interviewed. I think it depends on the school whether it is positive or they're simply 'on the fence.'

I know that UT interviews everyone they don't initially ding.

They do but I think that, if you get to that point, it doesn't actually have much potential to hurt you.

I'm not sure how much one can generalize about UT's transfer admissions practices as they continue to figure out their methods. Interviewing transfer candidates was not SOP two years ago.

I've also heard that they "interview" you to offer you on the spot.
