Top Law Schools

Thoughts on chances? Happy to give up law review for better long term name recognition + quality of life for personal reasons (family is from NYC - H being more for prestige than for personal). CoL would be the same since current school doesn't have a scholly.

Goal is NYC big law. Probably have a good chance at current school - will that remain strong as a transfer?

Your chances at Big Law will remain or improve if you transfer out from DCNG. However, if you look at the newest class of 2013 employment data, even GULC has 41% of that class in BigLaw--and they're at the bottom of the BigLaw list (behind Yale, but that's because Yale has 35% in FedClerk that will transition into BigLaw). Hiring has slowly, but surely, been increasing steadily over the past three years (and enrollment is down).

I think you should apply to Columbia and NYU for familial reasons, and Harvard for professional reasons. However, your chances of getting into Harvard in the top 20% of DCNG are slim to none. If you can rock this semester and slip into the top 10% then it would be worth the $85 application fee. In regards to C&N, I'm sure it's possible to transfer in as top 20% at DCNG, however you'd be more comfortable in the top 15-10% as well.

I am an NYU transfer. I was top 20% at a non-t14, so you obviously have the grades. I had something like 10 callbacks and a few NYC biglaw offers at EIW. Transfers do very well at NYU. I've heard mixed things about Columbia transfer OCI opportunities, so you may want to look into that.

The main problem with CLS is their administration is notoriously slow/shitty. If you end up applying there for transfer, try to get your application in as early as possible so you'll be able to resend in your Dean's Cert and transcripts after they lose them.

You'll have great OCI opportunities at CLS if you get accepted by mid/late July. NYU saves spots for transfers and is extremely transfer-friendly, even for those applicants admitted in the first/second week of August. As long as you get accepted a month before OCI, though, you're in a fantastic spot for landing biglaw as a transfer through either school's EIP/EIW.
