Top Law Schools

First semester grades are yet to come out but I'm just looking to get an idea on what my options will be barring a solid GPA (hopefully T10% of class)? Hopefully, looking at a 3.6 + GPA (but not exactly sure yet). Looking to go Top tier school. Most likely will apply to top schools in NY area (NYU, Columbia, Fordham). Let me know my chances/give advice for transferring.

There's really no way to know without your GPA, which is basically the only thing schools care about for transfer. With a good GPA, NYU is very doable. Columbia has big classes, but I don't know much about how picky they are about your 1L school (didn't apply). However, to transfer from Hofstra to a school worth transferring to, you need to be at the very top of your class. Focus on doing well your second semester. There's plenty of time after school ends to get your applications together.

sap is a sage poster but im a little more skeptical. basically all that matters for transferring is your GPA but that's examined in the context of your school. what im questioning is whether you can really move from Hofstra to Columbia or even NYU. I konw NYU tends to be a bit more friendly but Hofstra isnt even a T2 if i remember correctly.

I mean, you'd probably need to be like student number 1-5 in your class, but 2 of us (no. 1 and no. 2 in class) got into Berk from USF, and there's a girl here on LR who came from Golden Gate (I'm sure she killed it, but it's possible). NYU has bigger classes than Berk and Hofstra isn't as crappy as Golden Gate, so it should be doable if OP seriously kicks ass.

well we both agree on the main point. kick ass, be at the top of your class, apply and we'll see your options then.

Thank you for the quick responses. I'll let you know in 2 weeks when the first semester grades drop. That being said, should I blanket the T14 (+Fordham) w/ applications if I do well?

Fordham you cant participate in OCI. So thats something to think about

If you get into the top 15% to 20% you can probably go up the ladder to a school like Fordham, BU, BC, GW....the top 20-30 range. I would also look at schools outside of NY. I would recommend transferring regardless how much money you get from Hofstra. Not to be harsh, but Top 10-20% from Hofstra is worth ALOT more in the transfer market than it is in the job market.

Finally got my grades… I got a 3.71 GPA - I'm hoping to do even better next semester so i can get in the 3.8 range. What are my options/chances looking like right now for transferring?

Do you know what that translates to in terms of class rank / percentile?

Sorry... I should have phrased that a little better. Based on last year's grades, do you have a general idea of what a 3.71 translates to in terms of percentile / rank? (Do you know what top 5%, 10%, etc. GPA cutoffs were for the Class of 2015?)

- I actually have no idea. I can't find it online. I'll try to get some information tomorrow.

I agree w/ this. You should transfer out and transfer cycles are random. I would take advantage of any Early Action programs(non-binding) transfer schools have. It would be good to have a transfer locked in b/f second semester

I would not bother with Chicago ED. I had a higher GPA than you at a Tier 2 and they rejected me outright.

All I can tell you after talking to some professors is that I'm T10% maybe even slightly better.

I've gotten it on good authority that to go from Fordham to NYU you need to be at least around the 10% mark to stand a chance. I'm fairly confident that to go from Hofstra to Fordham you also need to be around the 10% mark.

What that means for Hofstra -> NYU you can probably figure out on your own

Yeah i'm aware that to go from Hofstra > NYU - I will need to be top 1% or so.

I wouldn't go to Fordham anyway with the lack of OCI. You'd probably be in at GW if you applied, though. At least you can do OCI there.

So besides GW, are there any other good schools worth applying to? I want to be able to participate in OCI.

A girl ranked top 3 people or so at my old school, loyola New Orleans, got into NYU. Def worth the app if you stay where you are.
