So I got my first transfer acceptance, and need to deposit in just a few days, but I haven't heard from any other schools yet. By depositing, I have to sign a statement that I'm withdrawing from all other schools including my home school. I would hate to do this without hearing from better ranked schools, but also don't want to reneg on a promise like that.

What's the consensus on double-depositing? Is this very common and I'm overreacting? Are there consequences to reneging on that promise? Is it a serious ethical no-no? I want to do the right thing while keeping my options open.

Don't double deposit. There is always a chance that, if you sign that statement, and you try and back out, the school could show it to other schools, who will then have grounds for not taking you. Only deposit 1 time. Contact the school you are waiting on, and see if they can accelerate your decision so that the prior acceptance doesn't expire.

It's NYU. Does your question mean that this is unique? I just assumed all schools do it.

so its a deposit AND this signature? ive never heard of such an arrangement

The fact you have to withdraw from your home school is brutal, as well. What if you haven't even heard from admin on a scholarship negosh? That seems far too restrictive. I wonder if other NYU admits will chime in, you'd figure they already would have...

I got the admit packet and there are two forms: a deposit form, and an Intent to Enroll form with the aforementioned restrictions. You can't even avoid it by depositing online, as they make you click a button confirming the same thing: not just that you've withdrawn all other pending applications, but withdrawn from your home school, too.

It's pretty harsh. I'm upset I likely will not have heard from my other schools by the deadline.

I can almost guarantee u that at least some schools don't give a shit. Yale transfer decisions came out so late previous years that the admissions office expected people to simply ditch deposits at other schools. I would also read the terms carefully, I am pretty sure these things make you withdraw from all schools where a decision has been rendered, not from schools you are still waiting on.

Guess I should have asked if anyone has successfully received an extension.

how many days did they give you from the date your status checker showed Decision Sent?

Yeah, but they do it in lieu of a deposit. GULC and, I assume, manyother places let you pay a (pretty large) deposit instead of rather than in addition to signing the "I withdraw from everywhere" statement.

I don't see this condition in the email. Is it in the hard-copy acceptance letter?

For 0L it was in the hard copy- It's possible that it is different for transfer apps?
