Hm, hadn't thought about that. How much of a hit will I be taking? If I maintain my grades (I know that's a big if, but indulge me)? Will my 1L grades simply be ignored?

Hm, hadn't thought about that. How much of a hit will I be taking? If I maintain my grades (I know that's a big if, but indulge me)? Will my 1L grades simply be ignored?

i think one of hte bigger issues is LOR (if i understand this issue correctly). you may be burning bridges so to speak with respect to faculty backing from 1L professors.

It's really hard to quantify. For judges who hire relatively early (e.g. after fall 2L grades come out but before spring 2L grades come out), you will only have a single semester of grades at your new school which even if good still does put you in a weaker position than the people you are competing with from that school (people who have grades all from your new school). But the two big things you will be giving up are LR (potentially) and professor recs. You would have to gun hard for recs as a transfer since you will only have 1-2 semesters to get a professor to write you something. And even if you do, it likely won't be as effusive as a rec from a professor who has known you longer.

This isn't to say your odds would go down more than marginally (maybe they would, maybe they won't), but clerkship apps are often so random that you could definitely be shooting yourself in the foot. I think this is especially true if you want to clerk in the area where your school tends to do better in clerkship apps (e.g. midwest for N, southeast for D, etc).
