Top Law Schools

Looking for advice. Not a lot of info out there on these schools.

I am an NC Resident, who went to lawschool in FL like a dumbass. I have a family health issue that I really need to be in NC for. I was wondering what my chances are at UNC or Duke or Wake Forest.

I am currently top 15% . If I kill it this semester and make top 10% can I get Duke? What do I need for Carolina or Wake?

Be #1 at your school, and you can aim as high as you want. Instead of asking us what grades you need to transfer to particular schools, why don't you call and ask? Those schools set the standards and will decide whether to accept you. As a general rule, get the best grades possible, and you will be able to transfer somewhere.

Duke doesn't really take transfers, but you might be in a unique situations since you're from NC and want to go back there.

You are pretty much exactly what UNC looks for in transfers.

I'd say you have a very good shot at Wake, and a good shot at UNC. Not sure on Duke.

I agree with above posters that UNC and Wake would be good bets if you maintain rank. Duke takes a very small amount of transfers. From my experience, I think they favor North Carolina residents a bit in transfers (probably an employment thing). While you still have some work to do to make your grades competitive for Duke, I would advise you to apply anyway and get the app in as early as possible.

Both Duke and UNC are not really that comfortable with the whole transfer thing. Duke takes so few, while UNC entered into an agreement with all the other law schools in the state (Duke, Campbell, Elon, Wake, NCCU, Charlotte) not take transfer applications from students attending other North Carolina schools. Instead, UNC only accepts hardship transfers for the most part.

Duke is incredibly selective. They winnow their transfer pool down and then interview each candidate that made it pass the screening process. They really want to see if the person can hit the ground running and really add value to the community. They also look why you want to go there. They only accept 6 to 8, so they want someone who really wants to be there and isn't just holding out for CCN. Still worth a shot.

UNC requires that you show a dire need to transfer. It's not enough just to be in-state. This makes them very selective, but not necessarily from an academic perspective, like Duke. They cite as an example of such a reason as your spouse has been relocated because of military reasons. I don't know the severity of your family medical issue but if it lingers into the summer when transfer apps go out, it sounds serious enough. Can't beat that in-state tuition, even with a scholly to Miami. Wake will take you.

This is anecdotal but I know someone who was top 7% or so at a T2 in Chicago that transferred to Duke without any NC ties. I imagine Duke takes the "holistic" approach to evaluating transfers more seriously than other schools because of the small amount that apply and get accepted. With that said, there is always an implicit numbers cut off that us posters simply cannot nail down with any certainty. I would say gun for top 10% and you will have a relatively strong shot.
