Top Law Schools

Hi,
So I'm a 1-L at a Chicago TT (Kent/Loyola/DePaul) and planning to stay in Chicago long term. My career goals don't include Big Law necessarily, but that is an option. I finished the Fall semester in the top 1 or 2% which has gotten the transfer thought wheels turning. Honestly, my TT makes the most sense for me practically (commuting, 60% scholarship, I like the school, etc) but I don't really want to squander a good start to my school year.

Does anyone know if Kent /Loyola/DePaul negotiates with transfers for additional money? I'm planning on at least submitting some transfer apps in the spring, but is it worth trying to get more money out of Kent/Loyola/Depaul ? Does anyone have any other advice for trying to transfer to U of C or Northwestern?

First if you get accepted ED at Chicago, you're obviously not getting any money from your school. Second, Loyola categorically refuses to negotiate with students for scholarships so if you're there you're not getting more money by waving a transfer acceptance in their face. However, I'm not sure if the other ones do.

As to transfer chances: if you maintain that GPA you're almost certain to get into Northwestern and probably will get accepted at Chicago. Though if you're commuting from the burbs UChicago can be a horrible trip (and Northwestern is too actually given that it's so far from Union/Ogilvie/LaSalle. You might have a good shot at ED at Chicago, so if you decide it would be a good place for you I'd apply.

If you decide you really want BigLaw transferring can make your life a lot easier. Whereas a lot of the Chicago firms will dip pretty far into the class at Northwestern/Chicago, at the other schools they typically want Law Review, Moot Court, Teaching Assistant, etc. Doing all that makes your 2L year so much busier, whereas as a transfer you can ease up a bit (at least that's been my experience.)
