Top Law Schools

Seeking advice on whether to transfer down in ranks. Currently a 1L in a bottom T2, and obviously no grades yet so this is all speculative. However, I want to transfer back to NYC and am considering all NY schools, including NYU, Fordham, Brooklyn, Cardozo, and CUNY.

My question is that even if I have the grades to transfer to any of the higher ranked schools, but my goal is to be DA, should I bite the bullet and transfer down to CUNY, which would alleviate huge debt down the line? The debt is a big concern of mine, as well. I'm currently paying sticker, btw.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Usually I never give this kind of advice, but maybe your situation really warrants it - if you are sure you want to transfer to NYC and you don't want to take on a big debt, why don't you drop out now, move back to NYC, and reapply for next year?

I'm doing pretty good in school right now, and don't want to waste a year. It's not that the debt is terrible per se, I came into law school knowing I would incur debt, but is transferring to CUNY just because I want to be a DA and its lower tuition worth it?

I don't know about CUNY and DA hiring; maybe someone else can help. If you think you're doing well though, stick on. You can eventually work your way back to NY. If transferring up is an opportunity, do it, but if that becomes a possibility your school will typically reduce your debt burden.

This is something you should've figured out prior to enrolling. If you're not happy where you are now, you should withdraw and re-apply to schools you'd be happy with.

Also, if your goal is to be DA in any of the five NYC boroughs, you should know that those jobs are insanely competitive, always have been, and are even more so ITE. Good luck getting that from CUNY.

You have no idea how your doing because you haven't been through finals yet.

Not sure how much it matters if OP wants to transfer down to a low Tier Two or Tier Three law school. Even below median might suffice. (Of course, this would exclude NYU & Fordham from OP's options.)

If you're dead certain that you want to take this path then you should take vanwinkle's advice and withdraw now. If you decide to stay and (based on your actually grades) you could transfer to CLS/NYU, then their LRAPs will be very helpful if you went the gov/PI route. There is a very low likelihood of you being able to do that though.

In sum: either withdraw now and reapply to schools you'd be happy with or stick it out and comeback when you have real 1L grades.
