3.7 at Vandy/Texas/UCLA

I know it's just one semester, but where do I have a shot at transferring if it holds up?

I would prefer UPenn, UChicago or NYU. I really do not want to get stuck working in my school's primary market, yet breaking out from this school seems ridiculously hard (at least for 1L summer - sent out dozens of resumes and only got offers in the surrounding area).

Not at UT. 3.7 should be around top 20% (probably 18 ish) for Texas

Also, if you're at UT, be happy with your offers. I'm in the top 10% and still have nothing.

That's insane. What's median?

Just stay if you can't transfer to HYS. I don't know if you're at UT or Vandy but a 3.7 at Vandy is definitely better than being at any non HYS school with average grades. Although that wouldn't technically be you as a transfer to a non HYS school I wouldn't be surprised if firms viewed you somewhat similarly. You won't have law review on your resume and you will be interviewing amidst a mass of students with easy to compare stats--while you will be somewhat difficult to evaluate in comparison. 3.7 at Vandy should get you a NYC firm job without much trouble if you're obsessed with leaving the area. You might be able to get Atlanta (if that qualifies as out of the area to you) and you probably have a decent shot at DC as well.

If you're at Texas I don't know what to say considering a poster said that a 3.7 is only top 20 percent there (????).

3.7 would only be top 20 at Cornell and NU also I believe.

OP as UT. Ignoring whether he is top 10 or 20 percent, I do think there is some merit to wanting to xfer if he doesn't want TX. I'd imagine he'd have a lot more opportunities to interview with non-TX places if he xferred to a T14. I think it's a pretty risky move but it depends on how badly one doesn't want TX.

But yeah if you don't want to be in Texas I'd try to transfer. A lot of this will depend on your second semeter grades though, since I wouldn't do GULC EA and Chi ED is unlikely.

Depends upon your class rank. Top 15% eliminates H,Y & S. Top 15% may get you a second offer from Penn. Overall, Michigan may be a realistic option. Nevertheless, giving up full tuition & fees plus a housing allowance at Texas is tough if Harvard is out, in my opinion.

Assuming top 15%, then consider applying to:
1) Michigan
2) Penn
3) NYU
4) Duke
5) Northwestern

Is debt still a factor? I see that's why you inititally turned down Penn.

3 LSAT scores: 162 -->170--->177. Oct, June, Feb. Took the full ride over waiting out a cycle.

And only a handful of schools require disclosure of military disciplinary actions (HYS not among them). U of C did require disclosure but didn't care.

Yes, however, now that I am more confident that I "get" LS (especially if I improve after 2nd semester, as seems more likely than not, due to the classes and professors). Also, only paying 2 years of tuition at Penn, etc. is a pretty good deal. This was kind of my plan all along.
