How do you update your resume after a transfer?

I'm working on OCI stuff and I need to change my resume now that I am transferring. Any ideas on how I should do this? I imagine that I will keep my previous law school GPA, but should I replace my anticipated graduation date with "Transferred"? And any ideas on what I should do for my new school to explain why I have no grades? Or will it be obvious from my having two law schools on my resume? Thanks!

I was told to do it like this:

New School City
Juris Doctor, expected May 2013

Old School City
First-year J.D. coursework completed 2010-2011
GPA: x.xx/x.xx
Class Rank: % or xx/xxx

Your new school might have specific policies about how transfers are supposed to represent this on their resumes. Definitely check with them.

Thanks Star. But would the GPA be something like 3.58/3.00 to show what the curve was, or should I do that out of the highest GPA offered?

And any tips on how to mention transferring in cover letters? I doubt it would be that much, but I was thinking about something like "Although I enjoyed my first year in law school, I transferred to New School because I wish to practice in New City (where most of the firms I apply to will be)."

Probably better off asking your new career services those questions. I'm just doing what mine told me to do.

How long do you need to keep your old school on your resume? Until you receive your first semester grades at the new school?

I'm pretty sure it always needs to be there. You can't really misrepresent yourself by making it look like you always attended New School when really you've only been there for a semester (a year, two years, etc.)

Hey, this should prob be in a different thread....but how does OCI work with transfer GPA? Do we get to pretend and apply for jobs that require Top 10% at new school?

I'm also curious about this. Especially since my old school didn't rank and I'm not sure the firms I'm now applying to will know that...

Seconded. Ask your OCS what they recommend.

My transfer school sent us some sample resumes, for instance.

I think it deserves its own heading until you have a transfer-school GPA. After that, you can represent it as a bullet point below your transfer school.

Individual school policies on the matter may vary, however.

Most questions in this thread - for instance how to approach GPA cutoffs for OCI at a new school - are best addressed by your specific school's OCS.

I feel like I remember being told you have to keep it until graduation.
