Hey folks:

first time poster here...

I was wondering what y'all thought about sending an email to the dean of admissions as sort of an addendum to my application.

I have secured a judicial externship for the coming fall with a federal judge (and before anyone raises concerns about conflicts with the new school, I have already touched base with the director of externships and she said it wont be a problem), but i decided to not include it in my application materials... mainly because it hasn't happened yet. Looking back (and reading the boards) I regret that decision.

Also, I graded onto law review at my current school. I didn't include this on my application materials because it didn't seem relevant (to me) to the new school... again, another decision i regretted after seeing what others have said on the boards.

1) will it hurt to email him about this?
2) any recommendations of the tone/wording if i do send something?

Doesn't sound worth it. Fed Judge externships are pretty commonplace for people with good grades and also if you graded onto law review that's kind of redundant to your grades as well.

No harm in updating with relevant information and this absolutely meets that standard.

Ultimately the commonality of the position depends where you're coming from, but interning with a federal judge is not THAT common among transfer students specifically because most aren't coming from great schools. It's not exactly unique, but part of the point in updating schools is to demonstrate your continued interest in the program anyway.

Just e-mail them the update. They likely won't care about what you're doing, but at the very least it will show continued interest in the school.

Do it. I wrote on to my school's LR and sent out some update emails. I don't know that it has affected any decisions, but every place did write back to say they would add it to my application. Also, when I had a phone interview with Vandy's admissions, the guy said it's a good idea to update your resume with such info, even if only for OCI purposes. He also did mention that having a summer legal job listed on your resume was a good thing, so if your externship wasn't on your initial resume I'd say it's probably a good idea to send that update. There's also no way that saying "Hi, I did more good stuff" is going to hurt your app. And like bc said, it's not a bad idea to send the update just as a way to let them know you're still interested.
