Top Law Schools

Top 10%, LR @ McGeorge. Is it smart to transfer? Looking at USC, UCLA and Loyola.

Yes you have a shot.

Yes you should transfer if you want to work big law. If you want to work government or mid sized firm then stay put!

I applied last week -- McGeorge didn't release grades until June 20th so it really slowed everything down.

Loyola is pretty good about letting transfers on Law Review. I know because I am one (from Southwestern). The Editor-in-Chief is also a transfer (from Oregon).

That's good to know. I probably won't be able to solicit though because I am already obligated for the year to McGeorge's LR, even if I transfer. I'm not sure I'd be able to handle two at once -- or if I'd even be allowed to.

No. That is ridiculous. You come to Loyola, submit a good transfer write-on packet, and join our Law Review.

Here's my 0.2c:

USC--doubtful, just because they accept so few transfers.

UCLA--definitely possible, could go either way. I seem to remember 2 or 3 McGeorge transfers my year, and I would think that top 10 percent is about right, since higher than that (closer to %5) is likely in better shape for T14-T10ish.

Loyola--I would be pretty surprised if you didn't get in.

I'm assuming you are pretty sure you want to end up in LA? If so, I think transferring makes sense regardless of which of the three you get into.

As for the "already committed to LR" at McGeorge even if you transfer thing... That does not sound right to me, and I have never heard of such a thing before. Why would they possibly have someone on LR that does not attend the school? Just doesn't make sense.

^That's what we were told. McGeorge's LR has two different divisions -- traditional comment and also a legislative review. Both are part of LR. The legislative review work starts in the summer, which we have already started. I honestly don't have a problem continuing, even if I transfer, because it is actually very interesting getting involved in the legislative side of things.

Fine. But remember, if you transfer, you do not owe anyone at McGeorge anything.
