Anyone been able to get out of transfer orientation?

My probable new school has a mandatory orientation on August 10, almost two weeks before the start of classes. I'm RAing for a professor this summer, and while she hasn't set a formal end date, the implication was that it would run up until the start of classes at my current school, which would end it on August 18. I'm a little peeved, because I specifically researched start dates to make sure I could make it all work. I knew it would be a quick move, but this early orientation is throwing me off. I've already been through a year of law school, so I don't need someone to tell me what a library is, and I would think most all of the logistical stuff could be handled without my physical presence. Anyone else had this problem or been successful in arranging to get out of orientation?

Seems like natural solution would be, "professor, you know how we didn't set a termination date? I need it to be before my transfer orientation. But if you need me to put in some extra time between then and now to make sure I don't leave any loose ends, I'm happy to do so. Thanks."

Alternatively, you could ask take that one day off to go to your orientation, or you could offer to finish your RA work from your new apartment near your new school. One of my fellow transfers this year continued doing RA work for a prof at his old school pretty much through the Fall semester.
