Top Law Schools

I seem to only be hearing stories of folks that tried and failed to write-on to their transfer school's law review. Does anyone have any success stories? LR is important to me, my target school takes about 30 xfers, allows about 8-10 onto LR. Better odds than most but it is still a gamble...

I think WUSTL had 4 on LR, 5-6 on the law and policy journal, and a couple on the global studies review from last year's transfer class.

I knew a girl who transferred with me from my old school and she wrote on to LR at the transfer school. But she was a professional writer and had pretty sick grades at the old school (not that that matters for write-on purposes from a transfer perspective). That sounds like a lot of spots for a transfer class. Basically you have a 1/3 chance (at best) of writing on. Those are pretty goods odds.

I think my new school only had room for 2-3 transfer students from a class of about 30.

IIRC, at GW, there were like 5-6 accepted onto LR (and probably 5-6 onto all other secondaries...so like 10-12 total transfers onto all journals) out of 100 transfers. ROFLCOPTER. It's not even worth the effort to go through the obscenely large comp packet.

Non-T10/6/whatever transfer write-on competitions are a scam (basically, schools where you can't just "sign-up" for a journal). It's kind of a bummer too, but it didn't prevent me and many I know from landing biglaw jerbs.

I think it is nearly impossible to write on to ND Law Review as a transfer.

Any one know about success at GULC? They have 11 journals so I figured odds might not be so bad..

This doesn't make sense. The graders don't know who is a transfer when they are grading the write-on. It's no more a "scam" than it is for a "native" doing the write-on.

FWIW, at Chicago, no one has successfully gotten onto LR via the write-on competition as a transfer in many, many years; but I know for a fact that the boards do not have access to the "who is a transfer" list until after the grading is completed (because LR does have a rule that they will take no more than two transfers, which is a little scammish - but irrelevant, since they haven't taken one). That said, in the last two years, one transfer in each year has successfully "Noted on" by writing a publishable Comment. One of them (in the CO 2010) went on to get a fairly high board position.

At my original 1L school, during my 1L year the EIC was a transfer.

If you're at a school where 8-10 out of 30 transfers successfully write on, that seems like it is probably *better* odds than the "native" students, so you should go for it.
