I was considering santa clara. Why do you want out so bad? It would help to get some feedback from you because I can eliminate this school from my list if you think it is awful.

What state do you want to work in?

preferably california but really any big city would work, including east coast

Same here, top 15-20% at SCU Law, I'm hoping to get out (Davis, Hastings, etc.), got three letters of rec (one from a prof saying my grade did not reflect what I should have gotten in the class but because of stupid SCU curve she had to etc.). I'm hoping to see where people say we can go

Yahoo transfer apps have someone transferring from t2 top 20% to UC Hastings and UC Davis. The same is true for Notre Dame, WUSTL, and Emory. You might want to try some of those schools. Also, I am really curious why you really want to get out of Santa Clara if you don’t mind. I get the whole hating your 1L School, as that is my situation.

Decent shot at Davis/Hastings. I doubt top 20% at SCU will have a great shot at schools in the T20 or better (but never hurts to try). Also, a note saying your grade does not reflect your abilities because of the school's curve, probably won't help you because your transfer admissions are based on how you rank within your school, not your raw gpa. A letter saying your grade does not reflect your abilities because of anything but the curve is likely to be more helpful (not sure how helpful if at all helpful).

Transfer restrictions vary substantially from school to school. Some require top 5%, some require top 10% & many seem to have a top 20% cutoff.

Consider the University of Washington School of Law.

Transfer to UC law schools requires checking with each law school. UC-Davis, for example, requires top 5% to top 10% = "...must be in the top 5% to 10% of their first year class." Hastings requires AALS membership. UC-Berkeley requires top 5%. UCLA doesn't specify a class rank limitation.

USC requires top 20%.

UC Davis might require top 5-10% and USC might require top 20%, but USC is harder to get into. A top 20% from a T4 won't get into USC, while a top 20% from Harvard would have no problem getting into Davis despite their so called cut off (granted, no one would do this). My point is your schools ranking plays a major role.
