ASU Transfer

Hi All --
Just making a thread here to help myself and others applying to ASU as a transfer document the application process. I hope that it can keep us all informed (or at least partially informed) during this brief process.
As for me, ASU has all my documents and application materials and just needs the letter of good standing/certified rank form from the Dean at my school. They should have this sometime in the upcoming week as I know it was already sent and then I will be complete. Hoping for a VERY short turn around as ASU is the only school I am applying to transfer to and I just really want to get back to Arizona and eventually practice in AZ.
I am from a school ranked 55-65 (that is very far from AZ), around top 15-17%, lived in Arizona for 17 years, have a summer job at a law firm in the PHX area, and have one (what I think) is a very strong and thoughtful letter of rec that accurately reflects who I am and why I would be a strong transfer candidate. I didn't get into ASU during regular admissions, and I am hoping that I have proven myself enough over the past year to become a member of their 2013 graduating class. This would be an honor and a dream come true to get back to AZ to be close to my family and friends.
So I guess just post whatever you wish to share about yourself and anything your hear from the admissions department or decisions you receive. Best of luck to everyone trying to transfer wherever you wish to attend!

To be safe, I think you should apply to U of A also.

I don't disagree with this statement for most people. Conventional wisdom would say this is really the way to go. But for me, I have a lot of reasons (personal and otherwise) for the decision to only apply to ASU. I know ASU is the place for me for the next two years, and I can only hope that ASU feels the same way.

So you'd rather be at a random T2 than at UoA? You'd be shooting yourself in the foot.

I totally agree with you are saying. On the surface, I know I probably look like a fool for not applying to UofA. But I can promise you that there is a lot more than what meets the eye for my specific situtation. If ASU does not take me, then I will be just as well off (if not better off) at the "random T2" as I would be at UofA. I believe one should transfer to better their situation, not just to get to a better school. I have weighed many options and outcomes, and I know I even PMed you in the past thinking another school may have been a "better fit." But life changes, situations change, and I just realized if I am going to transfer, there is only one school worth attending for my particular situation and that ASU is the perfect place for me to finish law school. I don't see myself anywhere but ASU this coming fall.

This is exactly the same position that I was in just one year ago! I transfered from a T4 and am extremely pleased to be at ASU. It sounds like you have a strong application and significant ties to the area (lived here previously, working here over the summer). Although applying to transfer to only one school is a risky move, I think it could actually be seen as helping your application because it will show how interested you are in ASU and how much you want to be a part of the program.
Good luck to you and perhaps we will see each other in classes next year!

Wow that's great! T4 to ASU...congrats. How long of a waiting process do you think it normally is once an applicant has gone complete? And would you mind sharing your rank/anything that made you a strong candidate? You can PM me if you would prefer. Thanks so much!

Yes I was pretty surprised I made the move too because my stats weren't outstanding (top 22% or so). But I was competitive the first time around when I applied and got waitlisted. I think what got me into ASU were the compelling reasons I offered in my personal statement (I wanted to participate in the Law, Science, and Technology program at ASU). Once you submit your app, you should get a decision fairly quickly. I had my application materials in around June 16th but my school didn't have my final rank until the 25th or 26th. I also gave an addendum to my application materials when I found out I made Law Journal at my old school. Only a day after the addendum I got the email telling me I was in (June 30th or July 1st I believe).
Good luck and if you have any questions or want to know more, let me know! What programs are you interested in at the law school?

Wow thanks for the information. I would love to hear within a few days. I didn't stress any particular program in my application, but instead really stressed location since my current law school is so far away. I also had the professor who wrote my letter of rec address it to ASU admissions specifically and target them in the letter. Further, I am interested in family law (the firm I am at this summer is like 55-65% family law) and the law school I am coming from also had a good family law program, so it just seemed to make more sense to stress location. But I am very interested in the Diane Halle Center for Family Justice. And unfortunately the way my school gives law review bids I will probably hear from ASU before the law review committee. Hopefully my school's rank, my top 15-17% class rank, my strong indication in my application I will go the minute I am accepted, and my ties to AZ will push me over the edge!

It sounds like you are in a strong position (even without a decision on whether you are on law review). The fact that ASU is trying to build their family law program along with the fact that you indicated you were interested in this area are very compelling reasons to transfer, I believe. Your rank/school is great too. In fact, I would be surprised if you didn't get in. ASU is a wonderful school and I am certainly glad that I transferred here; it is a decision that I sincerely believe has had a profound impact on my chances of career success.

Ditto. I'm getting ready to send in everything this week and am just revising my PS. Did you mention in your PS about originally applying to ASU?

No I didn't. I have heard of some people who mention it, others who do not when writing a transfer PS. It's a personal judgment call that I do not think will hurt or help your chances. I would be completely shocked if they didn't check (on their own, without being prompted via the PS) to see if each person applying sent in an application during 1L admissions and why they were not admitted or why they did not attend. The way I drafted my personal statement, they will get the hint that I wasn't admitted without me actually saying it. And as the other poster asked, what are your stats (school rank/your rank)? Mine are in original post. Are you applying anywhere else? Best of luck to you! I hope we both get in!

The school I am at now is ranked in the 80s, and if we would ever get our grades back, I'll probably be around top 15-20%. I'm an Arizona resident, and I did my undergrad at ASU, so I'm hoping that helps! Good luck to you all too!

FWIW, complete and in review. May this wait be short, painless, and end with an acceptance!

Received an email from the Director of Admissions Operations letting me know I was complete, in review, and they anticipate to have a decision within a couple of weeks.

Good luck everyone! Reading the posts in this thread reminds me of my experience exactly one year ago. FWIW, I went complete around June 15/16 and got a decision June 28.

Bump. Wondering if anyone has received a decision from ASU???? I am getting very nervous and anxious. I have been complete since last Monday, and they said within two weeks they expect to let me know (tomorrow will be 11 days). Maybe they will give me a good early 4th of July weekend present tomorrow. Oh those devils

Well.... I did get my offer July 1 of last year (which would be tomorrow). I bet they hand out decisions in the next week at least.

Well hopefully July 1st is the day they decide to start giving people the good news every transfer cycle. I think you are right that it will be within the next week at least, especially because the application deadline will be long gone. They now have the full pool of transfers to choose from. Thanks for all your information!

Admitted by e-mail on Friday at 3pm! Lower T2 that doesn't rank but does GPA cutoffs and was top 25% by last semester's calculations. Arizona resident and ASU undergrad. Sent 06/08/11 and complete on 06/20/11.
Good luck to everyone else!
Edit: I'll also add that ASU was the only school I applied to and thus everything was fully targeted to ASU.
