It would probably help to know what city of east coast your SO is in, and also what city of west coast your family lives in.

My family is in California, so I guess I'd be applying to Cal and Stanford. I suppose I'm sort of wondering about my chances at say Stanford or Harvard, which would be closer to my family/SO and are "better" schools. Or if I should consider Virginia, Penn, etc. since they are also closer to my SO. I'm ruling out NY schools based on high cost of living.

I think you'll have no trouble being accepted at Penn or Berkeley. UVA has a strong preference for VA transfers. Definitely worth applying to H & S, not sure whether they'll take you or not though.

Transferring to those schools from Cincinnati probably won't be possible with your current grades. If you want to go out West, maybe look at UC-Davis, Hastings or Irvine?

I believe U of C refers to University of Chicago

Hmmm, I guess we'll wait for the OP to clear things up. In my opinion, U of C = University of Cincinnati, and UChi or U of Chi = University of Chicago.

haha you guys are clearly not from the midwest. Also, note the reference to the quarter system, which I believe is only employed by UChi.

No way in hell you're going to get HYS by being slightly above median at U Chicago.

Looking at his prior posts, it's obvious he was accepted to Chicago last year. Also, his profile displays an LSAT in Chicago's range. I'm pretty sure we're actually talking about someone who wants to transfer down, as odd as that is.

Nothing in the yahoo transfer database or the TLS transfer forum suggests you have a snowballs chance in hell of transferring to Harvard or Stanford w/ median(ish) grades from Chicago. Think of this in the simplest possible terms. If median CCN qualified you for HS transfer, hundreds of soon-to-be 2L's from CCN alone would be eligible to move into the T3 every summer. In sunnier news, you're probably in the Berkeley ballpark.
Edited for clarity.

Presumably he has 2 more quarters to pull those grades up. I think top quarter might do it, though I can't recall seeing anyone make the move. Someone on here went Columbia to Yale and they were ~top 10% IIRC.

Berkeley is also far from a lock, though very possible.

Haha um, yes, great point. If OP had said he's top 10% I would not have posted what I did. Also, I'm not a math whiz, but median to top quarter,
let alone top 10%, would require
to two semester's of reasonably stellar grades. First term's predictive of future performance, so unless OP wants to dig deep, even top 25% is a pretty lofty aspiration.

Flame everyone in Chicagoland thinks the University of Chicago is the University of Illinois at Chicago.

OP should learn to love NYC because that's where he should bid at OCI if he doesn't get his grades up.

OP: transferring's kind of its own animal, and it's very much a black box. We can look at the data (from transferapps, TLS, anecdotal, etc.), but forming predictions from that dataset is nearly impossible. Sometimes top 10% at a T30 gets into H. Sometimes top 5% from a T20 can't crack the T6 (or even T10, if you look in transferapps). Best you can do is what you're already doing (presumably), which is try to get the best law school grades possible and cultivate at least two relationships w/ profs who'd be (1) supportive of your transfer and (2) willing to write great, personalized, and school-specific recs. Good luck.
