1L summer in a new place, know no one - thoughts?

Hey all, I've cross-posted the different scenarios I'm sort of facing so please disregard/forgive any others you might see in relation or that might seem similar. The insight I am seeking here is strictly with regard to 1L summer..
..as such I moved many states away for law school (T3/4, prolly 4) that's one of those "JUST RIGHT" distances away from home in that it's not quite far/convenient enough to fly home and so my commute home whenever I go is like ~8-9hrs. My girlfriend moved with me and the semester really went off without a hitch in terms of being able to study and prepare for exams. But, I haven't socialized hardly much at all.. and that's all fine and dandy because this all helped anchor me down and concentrate on school. Under normal circumstances, I'm really outgoing and make every effort to network and meet as many people as I can.. but I let that take a back seat on purpose because my #1 priority was/is obviously grades. Finals was a train wreck of stress, but as far as performance goes I feel great. (/fingers-crossed)
Here's kind of where the catch .22 comes in.. I'm setting up/planning for a transfer - but note that I'm not BANKING on it.. as such, it kind of puts me in a really odd spot for 1L summer. I mean, with home and shit being so far away, it'd be sort of silly to try to get work close to my parents' house (smalllllllll town) plus the idea of paying rent+bills for an empty apartment seems wasteful and my lease isn't done until the end of July, I think. But, at the same time, it's sort of tough to try to apply/commit to anything where I'm at now because if all goes as planned, I won't be here.. besides I doubt very many employers are going to even give me a second thought if I drop the "..I want the job, but oh yeah I MAY not be here..". What's more is that should shit go south, I'm not even sure how to go about finding employment up here.. I know no one in the area and the school doesn't seem to want 1Ls to do anything.. the only stuff I can find online through their portal is stuff about externships/clinics etc. I have a very high interest in criminal law.. so.. should I just cold-call some firms that do this kind of practice and ask if they're taking apps for 1L-summer students??
