If you want to stay in New York, I think top of Fordham's class is a great place to be.

Where do you want to work? What do you want to pursue?

BigLaw in NYC. Not particularly interested in a clerkship. Isn't NYU better long term?

Possibly more regular posters already know these things but

1) What do you want to do? BIgLaw NYC

2) Will you be losing a scholarship? No, Fordham only give $5K

3) Do you know what the chances of getting onto a journal at NYU are? I think high for a journal and very low for LR.

4) Is there something specific at NYU that appeals beyond the higher ranking?
No...just higher ranking. Isn;t that enough :)

"Long term" will depend more on how you do at the law firm you get placed at. If you can make partner there, it won't really matter where your degree is from. Even if you don't, assuming you'll want to stay in NY, you can keep putting Fordham Law Review on your resume in the education section and that will keep standing out for years to come.

If you think you can get a job at a firm you're happy with at Fordham, there's no point in transferring.

In 5-6 years, your work experience and connections will matter as much as your degree does, and you'll still be able to put Fordham Law Review on your resume.

NYU would probably matter if you cared about clerkships or teaching, but even then you'd need to be gunning for LR at NYU to have a real shot (since otherwise you haven't done much there, at least not yet, to distinguish yourself). You should know by now who's coming to Fordham OCI, since you're at the top of the class you should be able to work for anyone who's coming to your school, why give that up?

easy for someone from harvard to say...jk :) yeah, most top firms come to fordham but interview few and higher fewer. would i be worse off at NYU interview wise? tough call.

Your insanely high class ranking should allow you to have your pick of jobs in NYC. Don't see any reason to transfer.

Yeah, but you should be one of those few, with your 1L performance.

It's not random selection. The few who are hired usually come from the top, where you are. Don't make the mistake of thinking about it like you have random chances from Fordham. But at NYU you might, since you don't have the surety of being at the top at NYU, and you're not sure how well you'll do being seen somewhere in the middle.

I'm not sure why NYU would be worse for interviewing. Interviewers at NYU will be familiar with Fordham and know how to evaluate your performance, so you'd still shine as the same star student in that regard. But I'd guess that at NYU you'd have access to more employers than at Fordham, and receive more interviews, say 20-25. How many do top Fordham students receive?

I'd guess you'll have great BigLaw chances from either. So, given that's your goal, your decision will come down to more subtle things.

NYU is a bad career move, but not a very bad career move. You have to make allowances for what you want, rational or otherwise.

Is this really even a mildly difficult decision? You are in an amazing position, there is no reason to transfer given your goals.

Fordham.

People with your creds at TTTs wind up competitive for CoA, etc. Fordham is uniquely situated to place the top of its class into great opportunities. You rush back into the mix at NYU. Definitely possible that you'd do great at NYU and wind up with comparable opportunities. But Fordham is the much more sure bet.

I mean if you really know you want to work for Wachtell transferring will increase your odds. I can't really imagine anything else that would be tangibly helpful as opposed to just sort of tangential.

What you guys are saying makes lots of sense. I don't want to work for Wachtell and why throw myself back into the deep end. I already have a great GPA and know how to do well at Fordham. Thanks!!!!!!!!! So hard to not be a prestige whore...even when the decision is so easy like mine.
