I'm going to ask you the same thing I was asked when I (discreetly) sought opinions on what to do:

"Why did you apply if you're not going to go?"

After speaking with many transfer students while making my decision, the general consensus seemed to be that for firms that recruit at both your old and new schools, you will probably be treated as you would have been at your old school with a slight boost due to your successful transfer. If you really want to work in NYC, I say to make the move, because transferring will definitely be a strong indicator to firms that you are committed to living and working in NYC. If nothing else, that alone might help.

You didn't do well enough at your old school to justify staying. Reasons to not transfer, in general: You're giving up law review, you're giving up a high class rank, you're giving up a scholarship. The first two don't apply to you. Is it worth ~$50k to have NYU instead of your current school on your transcript? If you want to practice anywhere aside from the market your current school is in, absolutely. Now, if you're gunning for Texas, I might consider staying at UT, same for UCLA/California... but even then, it isn't a done deal.

This is pretty credited. Not an easy decision by any means, but totransferornot is right. I'd transfer in your shoes.

I say transfer only because you want to practice in New York. Your chances of practicing in New York are going to be shit from any of the schools you mentioned (Vandy UT, UCLA). If you want New York, you gotta go NYU and take the financial hit.

Edit: I'm being a little Unfair. You could have some chance of getting NYC if you did really well in some of these schools. But compared to being able to just stroll into New York practice with the NYU degree, you gotta go NYU.

I didn't notice that you wanted to be in New York.

This is a no-brainer, then.

I think the preselect thing is interesting. Did those firms choose to interview you because of your resume/class rank? Will you have the same type of choices at NYU OCI, or will you get all the firms nobody else wants? I also think the thing about transferring to NY showing that you are tied to the city is an interesting one. I guess I would transfer if I were you. . . no LR, no scholly (I think you said), as long as you could get decent interviews through NYU OCI.
