Top Law Schools

Hey, I'll be transfering from to the Washington University School of Law (I believe that is how they like to be known now-a-days) this Fall and I wanted to talk to the other transfer students. I couldn't find an already existing group on Top-Law-Schools.com, so I thought I'd make the "official" one.
This isn't a place to compare stats or anything like that, just a place to talk with others who are also transfering to Wash U, share questions/concerns and the like.
I know Wash U takes a substantial amount of transfers, so let's see how many are on Top-Law-Schools.com.

I have paid my deposit and will be there in the fall! I am from St. Louis, so if anyone has questions about where to live, the city, etc. let me know. For those of you that are planning on going, are you going to do the write-on competition?

Good idea. I was considering starting one of these myself. I plan on doing the write-on, but that time period is going to be hectic for me. I will be moving in the middle of it, and Early OCI is at the end of the write-on period. I am driving through St. Louis Aug. 2-3 to look at housing. My plan is to drop my stuff in storage, look at apartments on the 2nd, sign a lease beginning at the end of Aug., and then head to Texas where I am doing a short judicial internship. I will head back to St. Louis around Aug. 21 to move in. Do you guys have your housing figured out yet?

I haven't signed anything yet, but I am planning on living in the area directly North of campus (between forest park parkway and Delmar) since I will be able to walk to class from there. Do you know what area you want to live in yet?

To ubetchya and Lawhorn: Is the area between Forest Park and Delmar a better place than any to look for housing? I am currently trying to sublet my old apartment Cleveland and probably won't be figuring out St. Louis housing for another week or so. I'm also out of the country until August 20 so I'll probably being figuring out the housing situation from afar, so any advice is welcome.

I am going to do the writing competition. Doing the writing competition for my old law school was a b***h, so I'm not looking forward to it. But I figure with all the upstanding competition at WUSTL, I'll need the secondary journal on my resume lol.

I'm not doing myself any favors by saying it, by I def reccomend trying to write-on....

I have identified Central West End, Clayton, and the area just north of campus as my target areas. I will look at some of the Quadrangle housing (its university run and very cheap) while I am in St. Louis. If Quadrangle is manageable, I will just do that. My concerns are: CWE = no parking and getting to campus during winter; Clayton = higher price and maybe too old of a crowd. (I'm 26, but don't want ot be surrounded by all familes); North of campus = rowdy undergrads and older apartments.

To Total Litigator: The area b/w Forest Park and Delmar looks solid. I have heard that Delmar can get a little shady, so I would investigate any apartments in the area to make sure it is safe. Also, I would make sure the Metro is walkable and that you have parking. Those seem to be the main issues with the area. If you don't have housing situated by August 2nd, I will let you know my impressions of all the areas/apartments I check out.

I am going to be c/o 2013 and am very familiar with STL. If anyone has questions about housing or the area, fire away.

I agree with the sentiment that the Delmar area can be shady. The area between forest park pkwy and delmar, however, is a pretty nice area. As soon as you North of Delmar, though, it gets very spotty with rough areas. As for Central West End, it is a nice, young area with a lot fo apartments, bars, restaurants, etc. From my experience, most Wash U Law students live in this area. If you don't mind driving or taking the Metro, CWE is the place to be-it is also relatively cheap.

I found a beautiful, fully furnished apartment just south of Delmar and just east of Skinker. 1000 a month split two ways. The area north of Delmar can be rough, but south of it and and around campus is generally nice.

Hi folks, would anyone find it helpful to have a listserv for WUSTL transfers? We could probably get help from the school if there was interest...

P.S. I'm in Brentwood Forest, which is a very nice, very quiet community to the west of school. You're not within walking distance, but the Metro is super-easy from there.

So this is interesting....

"Beginning with the J.D. Class of 2004, faculty must abide by the mandatory mean restrictions for J.D. students' grades - for first year courses, the mean of the JD grades must be in the range of 86.5 - 87.5. For upper-level courses the mean of the JD grades must be the same as the mean of the GPA's of the JDs in the particular course."

This is relatively unique isn't it? Don't most law school simply use different standard grading curves for different sized classes? This means that transfers don't get the bonus of being graded on a higher curve because they miss out on 1L grading. Oh well, I guess that's fair enough lol

I am a rising 2L at Wash U and I have a one bedroom apartment in the CWE. I live in a really nice building right next to Forest Park with a lot of other law students. Unfortunately I have to break my lease and am looking for someone to take over and/or start a new year long lease. PM for details if you are interested.

Sweet deal. I deposited a while ago but they just got my official undergraduate transcript in the mail yesterday and I just registered for classes tomorrow. Exciting stuff.

I think I already might have a roommate, but I have a question.

I have found a ton of places to the northeast of campus, but I can't find anything to the NW of campus (which is closer to the law school that the NE).

Are there simply little/no apartment/houses for rent there? I can't tell from google maps, it is all commercial or residences?

Or am I just missing something? Anyone have any luck finding a place close to the law school? URL Links to an apartment complex close to the law school or tips would be very much appreciated.

Northwest of campus does have apartments, but not as many. If you look straight west of campus (like down Forsyth) there are a number of nice apartments within 10 minute walking distance.

Are you using Padmapper? If you are looking for apartments by location rather than price, Padmapper is an excellent resource. I highly recommend it.

Also, how far northeast are you looking? Feel free to PM me some of the neighborhoods you are looking at (street names and such). I am living northeast of campus (about a block east of Skinker and a half block south of Delmar) and I am looking at about a 20 minute walk, so not too bad at all.
