Wait...what. I had just assumed they meant that the writing competition was for all the journals, not just Law Review. Do you have a website link or anything to what you're saying? I'm at my job right now, and my acceptance packet is at home.

Hopes slowly rising though...

I was under the impression that you just had to rank the journals in order of preference and that there's no writing competition involved.

I believe the prefs are due the 4th of August.

Just called the school. I'm an idiot, never mind ha. We can get on by submitting notes during the year and if one gets published they accept us as a 3L

Wait a minute. Because their website seems to suggest exactly what you asked about in your original post. From the site:
Q: Are transfer students eligible to apply to the Law School's student journals?
A: Transfer students are eligible to apply to participate in all 14 student law journals at Columbia Law School. Each journal has its own application criteria. With the exception of the Columbia Law Review, transfer students are informed of application procedures for journal participation upon admission to Columbia 's transfer program.

Transfer students with an interest in the Columbia Law Review may apply in one of two ways: through an annual week-long Writing Competition or the Publishable Notes program...

So which is it? The staff you spoke with over the phone may have merely assumed you solely meant the Law Review.
