I remember the process sucked and would like to help anyone frustrated with it now. Hit me with anything about the app process, life at a new school, OCI, etc.

There is no "process." Admissions officers play kingmaker, slowly but resolutely crushing dreams along the way.

Only some dreams. Perhaps they should admit everyone?

I'll just go ahead and ask the obvious - what range school to what, stats, etc.

I think the way it must work is that they take all applications and place them into tiers at the outset on the basis of quantifiable variables - school rank, class rank, etc. Then, they establish a T1 that they review looking only for red flags - if there are none, these are green light applicants, and their softs are probably only marginally considered. They probably then have a T2, which are solid applicants whose numbers don't make them a "lock" - these applicants receive a very thorough review of their softs, and the committee tags applications they "like". Finally, they probably have a T3, which is everyone else.

They then start by offering everyone in T1 (unless there's a surplus, in which case they offer the quantifiably highest candidates). Once they figure out who's going out of that group, they make offers either to the rest of T1, or to the "likes" in T2 (again in order of numbers). T3 essentially exists as a backup for some catastrophic circumstance where there are still openings after T1 and T2 is exhausted, at which case only then do those apps get reviewed.

This is the only explanation I can think of as to why some people, despite having their application materials in well before other applicants who are now accepted, still haven't heard anything.

Of course not. My point is that, imo, the transfer application process in many schools seems less fair than the 1L application process. The transfer process is basically a way for admissions offers from some schools to let in favored candidates who may or may not be as qualified as the students they deny.

yea, it kind of varied throughout the summer, but i remember i got a bunch of decisions rolling in around mid-july. i think i had heard from anyone by early august.

How did you decide to bid at OCI? Did you target certain markets or levels of firms? CDO told me that I could bid up to the most selective firms because of my grades at my previous school (a t4), but this seems rather foolish.

I've only looked at the t14, but to me it seems like a fairly predictable process, in which grades/school rank determine most of what happens.
