Transfer Data (# In/Out) Last Two Years

LSAC must have recently updated each school's profile, including the number of people who transferred in and out. Here is the data:
2008 2009
In Out In Out
Yale 14 0 15 1
Harvard 22 1 39 0
Stanford 12 1 16 1
Columbia 62 0 79 7
Chicago 22 1 24 6
NYU 50 1 37 3
Boalt 39 1 45 0
Penn 29 8 30 10
Michigan 32 10 25 6
UVA 22 4 13 7
Duke 18 4 13 10
NW 59 5 37 6
Cornell 9 11 10 4
GULC 93 12 81 10
UCLA 38 10 46 9
Texas 14 11 13 9
Vandy 15 6 14 4
USC 12 3 19 4
WashU 37 11 46 12
GW 66 25 51 24
Hard to pinpoint any real trend, other than more people from the top schools are leaving. (7 at Columbia, 6 at Chicago). However it also appears that top schools are also increasing spaces for these applicants (a big jump in slots at Harvard and Columbia; NYU however, is down 13 spots).

Interesting. Look at HLS' and CLS' yield from 2008 to 2009. 2009 was a transfer bumper crop! I hope that trend continues for the top schools Although, i wonder what effects a bigger transfer class has on each class member during OCI -- probably quite difficult to discern from (then?) prevailing ite conditions.

Probably did so for personal reasons. It isn't the stupidest thing in the world. RBG transferred down from Harvard to Columbia and it still worked out for her.

Seriously. Had to be because of a significant other or family emergency or something.

Is anyone else pissed off that LawSchoolNumbers.com doesn't have a transfer student section? It was so helpful last time around, and the TransferApps database suuuuuccks...

Can anyone provide a viable explanation for the increase in CLS/HLS spots? I recall reading somewhere that in HLS's case, more students are going abroad 2L/3L year, thus opening up more slots. If it counts for a trend, do we think it should continue this year?

The transfer out of YLS went to SLS.

I guess one cheering thing about these numbers is that we can probably assume that, if 39 people transferred into Harvard and 15 people transferred into Yale, while 16 transferred into Stanford, somewhere between 50 and 60 people got accepted at Harvard in the first place. Likewise, if 79 people went to Columbia, I think it's safe to assume that they accepted at least a hundred.

TrayDeuce, do you mind read? Or perhaps some ESP is going on on my end, because I thought about asking that Q here about a half hour ago. I wonder if the higher end of your range might even be accurate; since HYS (and def. C) have waay overlapping admits, I doubt the yield could be terribly high for either H or Y. H could very well have offered 70+ last year. Sheer speculation on our parts? Absolutely. But it's also a good deal of common sense.

No, I don't mind-read, we're just bright people to whom the same pretty natural observation occurred. I think the higher end of my range is likely accurate (I was just trying to be conservative); Yale seems to be so choosy that virtually anyone they accept gets into Harvard too, and I don't think that many, if any people apply to Yale but not to Harvard. Maybe a few people at top ten schools who have very definite preferences.

Columbia's offers...meanwhile...would have to be absurdly high, then. 140??

You know, on second thought, I'm going to go with 120. A nice little compromise with your guestimate of 100.

120 seems safe. Surely many of the people who went to Chicago or NYU got into Columbia and chose to go elsewhere for whatever reason. And then there are all the Harvard acceptances, probably 60 of those. Could easily be over 140.

The very disturbing aspect of these numbers, if you're outside the top 20 and hoping to transfer way up, is how much movement upwards there is within the t20. Not counting HYS, you've got 69 people transferring in the t14 alone. Now how many spots are left at HYS after all those people move upwards? You'd have to think the majority are moving into HYS (who combined took in 70 transfers); it doesn't make much sense to transfer out of a t14 school for anything less. 15-20 is another 60 transfers. We know, of course, that Harvard takes t30, t40, even t50 applicants, but I just don't see that many such spots are available. It would be nice to think that for every Brooklyn Law School kid in the top 5% who says he made Harvard on transferapps, there are 2-3 others like him who aren't posting in transferapps, but how is that even mathematically possible?

Your intuition is right. I recently spoke with a Yale transfer who told me that only 2 people in her transfer class came from non-T14 schools, and one of those 2 people transferred from Texas.

Well, Yale with its 15 transfers is quite a different animal than Harvard with its 40. But yeah, at this point I'm kind of reconciled to the fact that, nice as my grades at my t35 school were, I probably don't get in unless I made Harvard Law Review (I did the write-on, thought it went very well, but who's really to say given how good the competition is).
